Pakistani-Born Mayor Repairs, and Wins, Texans' Hearts

Loved the read. Thanks.
Shows how Americans and Christians are not so racist after all as many would like to believe, i wonder how many Pakistanis would vote a Christian into a influential government position in Pakistan -
The other point, being missed here, is that Pakistanis (and other South Asians) are able, willing and eager to form a society based on rule of law and meritocracy. There is nothing genetically predisposing them to form a corruption-ridden society and, given the right leadership and momentum, these countries can reform themselves.
Dr. Hashimi has larger political ambitions than just being mayor of a small town in Texas. Suppose he moves back to Pakistan with the intention of starting a new "clean" political party in his mold of governance. Are Pakistanis here willing to abandon their traditional habits to vote and campaign for his cause?

it's a proof that Pakistanis are over-achievers and disciplined when the environment and system allows for it....if only we could from ground-up eradicate the cronyist/feudalistic/corrupt mindset of the people we elect or select to lead.

more power to this man

p.s. impressive garage he has too :D

Exactly....its about environment and education, belief and values, clear and just priorities, that is more important.

Us South Asians are just as smart as East Asians or Whites.

With the correct political framework in place, we can progress and be like Germany or Japan.

Assuming he doesn't succumb to the "charms" of the feudal elite after arriving here, he will find many Pakistanis welcome his agenda. The challenge is not to convince the ordinary public, but to beat the system. As such, the gauntlet is not so different from the US of A -- ask Ron Paul or Ross Perot.
