WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A naturalized U.S. citizen from Pakistan pleaded guilty on Monday to joining what he thought was an al Qaeda plot to bomb the Washington area subway system and received a 23-year prison sentence.

Farooque Ahmed, 35, was arrested in October in a U.S. government sting operation for conducting surveillance at subway stops and suggesting where to place explosives.

Ahmed, who moved to the United States in 1993, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda and one count of collecting information to assist in the planning of a terrorist attack on a transit facility, the Justice Department said.

Ahmed, who previously pleaded not guilty, changed his plea during a federal court hearing in Alexandria, Virginia.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped one count against Ahmed and agreed to the 23-year prison term, officials said. He had previously faced up to 50 years in prison.

U.S. officials said the public was never in any danger and Ahmed's activities were closely monitored during the six-month sting operation in which government agents posed as al Qaeda operatives.

After his arrest, the FBI said Ahmed had told undercover agents that he had trained himself to use firearms in hopes of fighting U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

Since the September 11, 2001, attacks, the Justice Department and FBI have faced criticism for such sting operations and questions over whether the suspects have been unfairly targeted and lured into plots.

Justice Department officials have defended them as legal and an important way to prevent another attack on U.S. soil.

Other recent sting operations include a Somali-born teenager arrested in November in Portland, Oregon, on charges of joining what he thought was a plot to set off a bomb at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

what oh i forgot US soldiers have license to kill anyone anywhere they are above the law.........they killed thousands of innocent people but there will be no international court for them in which they get punished but for others the law is different............

We should not shy away from the fact Farooque Ahmed pleaded guilty to terrorism charges against him and got the sentence he deserved according to law. He posed a threat to the many Pakistani-Americans who are a part of our society. Are not, dear readers, Mr. Ahmed’s plans to indiscriminately kill innocents the same as the overwhelming majority of casualties in Iraq who died as a result of terrorist Muslim on Muslim violence committed by insurgents and criminals? And so it is as well in Afghanistan where Taliban hatred and evil doers indiscriminately (and often intentionally) target innocents. The long occupation of Afghanistan under the Taliban regime and the destruction they caused to the nation and its people is not a secret to anyone. We, unlike the Taliban, are not above the law. We dress in identifiable uniforms, do not wear civilian clothes and do not use civilians as human shields or suicide bombers. When our soldiers are caught breaking the Uniform Code of Military Justice an investigation is conducted and justice is applied. Is it not, dear readers, Taliban who are above the law? Where is justice for Taliban murders videotaped by security cameras at the Kabulbank? Where is justice for those whom the Taliban indiscriminately kill with road side bombs? Where is justice for those Taliban killed in a Kabul shopping mall?

The US military is focused on eliminating the terror network and to help bring peace and stability. Afghanistan continues to strive towards prosperity and democracy with the help of the US and NATO forces. The US military is comprised of honorable and brave men and women who put their lives in the line of fire while leading Afghanistan towards a brighter future. We, unlike the Taliban take full responsibility for any wrong doing from our representatives in the region and the law is equally enforced on those convicted of wrongdoing. This is what we have done in past cases, and it is what will be done in this new case. “When allegations against soldiers recently surfaced, to include the inappropriate treatment of the dead, they are fully investigated,” the Army statement said, “Soldiers who commit offenses will be held fully accountable.” The actions depicted in these photos are an exception , not the rule and repugnant to us as human beings and contrary to the standards and values of the United States Army.
