Winter Sports Federation of Pakistan, in collaboration with Pakistan Air Force, has been earnestly working for the promotion of winter sports in the country and holding such events will not only boost the tourism industry in the magnificent mountains and valleys of the Northern areas but also help in projecting a positive image of the country all over the world.

Situated 40 Kilometers northwest of Gilgit, Naltar is the oldest ski resort of Pakistan. It serves as the main facility for the Ski Federation of Pakistan and the Pakistan National Ski Championship.

High-altitude GB winter sports competitions conclude

GILGIT: The week-long high-altitude winter sports competitions concluded on Thursday at one of the world’s highest sports arenas in the Shimshal Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The 10km target of the first-ever high-altitude winter snow race was achieved by 12 participants, including two girls. Mansoor Karim from Shimshal was the first to cross the finishing line, followed by Ahmed Baig from Shimshal and Shah Daulat who finished third.

Among the women racers, Samana Rahim was the first one to finish following Sarah Khan.

The event was organised by the Pakistan Youth Outreach Foundation (PYOF) at a high altitude of 4,100 metres in the Shimshal Valley of Hunza district.

PYOF chairman Mirza Ali and brother of world-famous mountaineer Samina Baig and his family had initiated the world’s highest sports arena in memory of their parents — Muhammad Khayal Baig and his wife.

A basic football ground, cricket ground and rock climbing routes were bolted in the area. Mountain biking and ultra-trail running were some of the sporting activities of the programme.

Around 30 young boys and girls participated in the camp, which was set up to encourage ski tourism in Pakistan.

The week-long camp was attended by Austrian skier Stefan Ager, who came to Pakistan for winter sports for the third time. He was accompanied by Sarah from Austria.

Parveena Ismail, 14, said: “This ski camp is an amazing experience to understand my abilities and competing with male participants gives me confidence and trust to pursue my dreams in the future.”

In the first-ever cross-country ski race, 11-year-old Zarar Ali Baig won the contest. He was followed by Shah Daulat and Naveedullah Baig. In the women category, Parveena Ismail secured the first position, Samana Rahim second and Sarah Khan came third.

PYOF chairman Mirza Ali said his organisation had been actively involved in promoting outdoor sports in Pakistan for the past nine years and the aim was to open new vistas for such activities and promote tourism.

MINGORA: Tourists from across the country flocked to Malam Jabba on Friday to witness a skiing gala at the 9,000-foot-high ski slope, which saw participation from over 30 national and international players.

The three-day skiing gala was jointly organised by the Pakistan Army, district administration and Samson group. The competition included slalom, giant slalom and free downhill races.

Amjad Ali, a ski player who is participating in the competition, told Dawn that he started skiing with wooden ski gears which he made himself but later on he was selected in the KP team and received proper professional gear.

“Presently, I am a professional ski player and participating in various professional level championships. Here, I will try my best to win the competition as being a resident of Malam Jabba, I am confident I will play a good game,” he said.

The players said that skiing was limited to the winter season and they waited for snowfall to play the game. They said that if the local ski players were facilitated they had the talent to play internationally.

Hundreds of tourists have also reached Malam Jabba to enjoy the skiing gala as well as snow in the picturesque valley.

“I did not expect to find such a beautiful place in Pakistan where everything is white with snow. The ski resort and the facilities available here are of international standards. I am surprised to see such skiing here because I always thought skiing was a European sport and is played in Europe and other western countries,” said Abdul Wahab Khan, a tourist from Islamabad.

The tourists said that Malam Jabba was worth a visit, and the government must open the valley for tourism by advertising about it on an international level.

Samar Sabeen, a tourist from Lahore, said that she visited Malam Jabba during the summer season and was excited to see the amazing valley covered in snow.

“I am also happy to know that the organisers of the event have organised a month-long ski training course for locals which is a very positive step for promoting winter sports and tourism in the country,” she told Dawn.

Pir Waris Shah, one of the organisers, said that the skiing event was polishing and promoting the ski talent of the country.

“We are not only facilitating professional players to go skiing here but also providing professional training to children and youth,” he said, adding that by organising the event they wanted to send a message of peace and harmony to the world and invite them to come and see the natural beauty and hospitality of the people. He also invited national tourists to visit Malam Jabba and learn skiing as professional coaches were providing services free of cost.
 
GILGIT: A winter sports festival and snow gala concluded at Municipal Ground Skardu the other day.

Participation of special persons in a volleyball match was unique feature of the event organised by army in collaboration with the district administration. Competitions of ancient sport, Ko Polo, football, volleyball and other sports activities were held between various teams. The main aim of organising the event was to promote winter tourism in the region.

Commander FCNA Maj-Gen Ehsan Mehmood Khan, GB Council member Wazir Akhlaq Hussain, Baltistan commissioner Hamza Salik, civil and military officials, also attended the event.

Players and their supporters danced on traditional music at the end of the competitions.

Addressing the concluding ceremony as chief guest, Gen Ehsan Mahmood said GB had potential of winter sports activities. He said it was encouraging to see that special persons also participated in the sports competitions. The FCNA commander distributed shields, awards and gifts among the winners of the competitions and special persons.

MALAM JABBA: Pakistan’s two time winter Olympian Mohammad Karim’s gold medals in both Slalom and Giant Slalom events helped Pakistan Air Force clinch the 12th Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Ski Championship trophy at Malam Jabba Ski Resort, Swat today.

He was in supreme form in both runs of these categories leaving behind his rivals with huge margin. His village mate and former Olympian Mohammad Abbas got the Silver medal in Slalom event.

Mir Nawaz of GB Scouts also had fabulous day as he got a Silver medal in the Giant Slalom and a Bronze in Slalom races, earning his team a second place on the podium.

It is the first time that Malam Jabba has hosted this prestigious event in the Winter Sports calendar of the country.

Skiers from various Ski associations of the country participated in the championship in temperatures below freezing point. A large number of spectators and Ski lovers from all over the country came to witness the championship.

Meanwhile, PAF also dominated Shah Khan Ski Cup, which was held later in the day. Two Silver medals by Rahim Khan in both Slalom and Giant Slalom races gave an unassailable edge to PAF in taking home the coveted prize.

Faiz Ali from CAA and Nazir Shah from GB Scouts won the Gold medals in Slalom and Giant Slalom events respectively.

Owing to a better aggregate GB Scouts was adjudged runner up in this event as well.

Snow Festival underway in Malam Jabba, Swat

A three-day Snow Festival is in progress in Malam Jabba, Swat.

It has been jointly organized by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Corporation in collaboration with District Administration Swat.

Different competitions including paragliding, skiing and snow boating are parts of the festival.
