KARACHI: Pakistan´s "war on terror" has cost the developing country a whopping $118 billion so far, a new central bank report has said, an amount equivalent to well over one third of its gross domestic product.

The central State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) released its annual report on Thursday showing extremist violence cost the country $118.3 billion in direct and indirect losses from 2002 to 2016.

"Both economic growth and social sector development have been severely hampered by terrorism related incidents," the bank said in the report.

Pakistan became a pivotal US ally in the battle against extremism after the September 11, 2001 attacks spurred the US invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan.

A Coalition Support Fund (CSF) was approved by the US to support Pakistan in the war, with an annual release of around $1 billion since 2002. By last year Pakistan had received a total of $14 billion under the CSF.

The country has also been waging a fight against home-grown Islamist insurgents since at least 2004.

The bank said that apart from causing immeasurable human suffering, including casualties and mass displacement, the war had helped drive away foreign investment, stall domestic investment, freeze exports, and slow down trade.

Pakistan has carried out major military offensives against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in its border tribal regions that have sapped their strength, with overall levels of militant violence dropping drastically in 2015 and 2016.

The economy, meanwhile, is improving, with the IMF saying in October that the country has emerged from crisis and stabilised its economy after completing a bailout programme.

Thank you Pakistani tyrant General Pervez Musharraf and the men and women in uniform who served him like brain dead morons, for this great achievement.

The repayment should be made from the military's pension contributions.

pension?
Now thats just idiotic.....

The cost has been high, an entire decade and then some, has been lost in this war. Pakistan GDP would have been around $600 billion now, if both the refugee issue and the war on terror never occurred.

The only thing Pakistan can do now is continue recovering and hope for the best.

. .
Summary

Total Aid recieved = 26 Billion $
Total Loss Calc = 118 Billion $
Margin = (80 Billion $)
Total Losses (Irreplacebale) = 70,000 Pakistani`s (civil + Armed)

For all those blaming Gen Musharaff, can you please come up with an alternate policy or strategy that would have avoided or reduced the 118bln $ losses?

One doesnt simply blame Army unless he is N-league supporter.
Is this cost higher than the cost of creation of Bangladesh due to arrogance of politicans (Z.A Bhutto and S.Mujeeb)???

Is hamam main sb nangey hain.

One would think that after huge loss of men, material and resources,Pakistani establishment would be honest in curbing terrorism, but I guess not

There is a typo error.

It should read 'America's war on terror in Pakistan.'

America's imposed war on Pakistan. They couldn't do to us what they did to the Iraqis and Afghans so they tried to destroy us through economic means. That $118 billion dollar lost was deliberately engineered by the americans. They knew what they were doing. Yet still failed.

And if Pakistan had refused to help USA we would have seen Pakistan turn into Afghanistan. Morons like you know nothing about dealing with powerful countries. Musharraf did what was necessary to save his country.

I'm sorry your Caliph Mullah Omar died of kidney failure in Quetta, don't despair there is that Baghdadi the pervert in Iraq claiming to be caliph. So you do have some hope of joining a death cult.

I guess most of the Panama money and overseas investment by politicians and generals have been settled as war on terrorism.

.
This war weather we like it our not was our own. It endangered our very existence and our religious and culture. Do people really think if Musharraf wouldn't have done what he did that we would be enjoying our lives. We took that decision and after the loss of thousand of valuable lives you still talk like that everything was a mistake by someone. We should start owning the decisions we made and try to live with the repercussions.. .

.
Agree with @That Guy its well above 118 billion.
Now What i don't understand is how we're dragging innocent lives in this war of terror.
We need a new strategy on this ,Something like search missions on all western cities,Cordon cities like Quetta and Western towns where attacks take place.
Something has to be done to make those towns safe
