It must be maddening to be a West Indies fan. In yet another case of one step forward and two back, West Indies squandered much of the momentum they had gained during the second session, allowing Pakistan's lower order to make sizeable contributions in a game where batting in the second innings is expected to get tougher.

West Indies had Pakistan seven down for a lead of 17 at tea. But any hopes of bowling them out swiftly after the interval were dismissed by wayward bowling. They gave away no less than three sets of byes that went down the leg side for four - runs which, in the context, were such a gift they might as well have had a bow on them. That, combined with erratic lines, allowed Pakistan to get streaky runs, including a gem from Yasir Shah.

With the pitch visibly deteriorating, every one of those extra 64 runs after tea was a dagger to West Indies' chances of a victory. But Gabriel and Holder showed composure and desire to keep chipping away, ensuring Pakistan's lead didn't get to the point where it became unassailable. Even so, the post-tea sloppiness undid much of their good work earlier.

After Pakistan had spent the first session ticking along at just over two runs per over in a manner that might be have been considered conservative in the 1970s, they snapped back into 2017 mode in the afternoon, scoring 103 in the session.

The captain Misbah-ul-Haq was responsible for the injection of pace into the innings. He looked good for a hundred but fell agonisingly short again, on 99. What followed was a manic 20 minutes in which Pakistan went from 316 for 4 to ending the session at 329 for 7, just 17 runs ahead.

After Misbah had looked serenely untroubled all session, it was a mind game, a review that's as tactical as could be, that appeared to disturb that famously unflappable mind. With Misbah on 99, looking like he'd finally get the hundred he has been due this series, he was struck on the back leg by his opposite number Jason Holder. It was never going to be lbw (too high), but the West Indies went for the review anyway.

It was so obviously not out everyone appeared to be having a laugh, and that light-hearted moment meant Misbah's concentration temporarily took its leave. The next ball from Holder reared up from outside off stump, getting Misbah stuck in an awkward position from which he appeared to neither play nor leave.

The pitch decided to be naughty at the most inopportune of times for Misbah, the ball rearing up, smashing into his glove and ballooning into the air. Shai Hope at gully can't have taken an easier catch in his life.

Misbah's dismissal came as a big boost for West Indies, and it was palpable. Shannon Gabriel returned to the attack and had Sarfraz Ahmed, who looked like he had come out with the intention to score quickly, edging an attempted cover drive to slip. The very next over, Jason Holder skidded one through that struck Asad Shafiq on the front pad playing across the line, and the umpire sent him on his way. This meant a session that Pakistan had utterly dominated suddenly turned into one the West Indies would end up being happier with.

The run rate had picked up as soon as the session began, with Pakistan looking a lot more comfortable as spin operated from both ends. The shackles were broken when Misbah swung free to play his favourite shot - a six over long-on - and suddenly, the batsmen were woken from their stupor.

Azhar brought up his 13th Test hundred soon after, with a cut past backward point for four. However, Devendra Bishoo was beginning to find his range on the surface, and beat Azhar Ali's bat from around the wicket on more than one occasion. Eight overs in, he got the wicket he deserved as one that spun past the opener's bat took a faint outside edge, breaking a 98-run partnership that took over 42 overs to accumulate.

Misbah, though, continued to play in the liberated mood he found himself in after lunch, sweeping well and even bring out the reverse sweep to neutralise the spinners' leg-stump line, and the runs began to flow freely, 67 coming off the 15 overs the spin bowlers operated in tandem for. Pakistan were by that point ticking off the milestones, the 300, the 50-partnership between Asad Shafiq and Misbah, and then going past West Indies first-innings total. However, it will be the one that got away - by one run yet again - that is likely to make this session memorable.

Misbah-ul-Haq punches one through point,

Misbah is unlucky 99 out twice

Shehzad should be showfinal door of exit from team after getting 2 life's he did not cashed in playing 80s era test against a a team which is easy to counter yet playing for balls after dots neither shehzad has technique of batsman of opener callibr he lacks shots and he is uneasy at times if u see him play u think 11 tailender might play better than him

Asad shafiz 15 rubs for 60 balls crimnal eventually one ball will come ur wicket return over it you must score what ever you play

Tough time ahead. Pakistan's position is not that good right now with westindies in lead now. Anything around 150 to chase in fourth innings can prove tricky on this pitch. We wont be out of the game but it will be difficult for sure.

Lead is 180+. Will be difficult but WI batsmen proved that you can bat on this pitch. Hope made 90 and Brathwaite 43. All we need is for 2 batsmen to play similar innings.

You consider Shahzad "depth", more like liability.

Last day today and will be a big test for our batsmen today.
We will first need to get the last WI batsman out cheaply and then work our way to eat into that target. It is a tricky pitch and wont be an easy task for sure.

Pakistan 5 down for just 30 runs in second innings.

Without agreesion you lose part of manhood, when folks go out to play timidly
chaos always happens

Looking back an agreessive 50 by even 1 player would have changed the outcome of match at start of innings

Problem lies in lack of Agreession and knowing to attack when you have won the match !!!

Tactical error , to go in with a 1-2 Run per over mentality vs trying to get to 50-70 runs quick as possible

Some of the older Crew in Pakistan Dug out have mentality of "defending" rather then being Agreesive as possible

Agreed look Ahmed shehzad 60 balls 15 runs I don't understand why he is playing he neither have any technique not any skill of shots wasting too many deliveries eventually one comes to get you out it is better score what u have got

I don't like Ahmed shehzad and asad Shafiq he scores runs only in loosing position

Please bring aggressive opener with azhar Ali atleast with some skills if not technique

The west indies cricket is in disarray. All their star player are playing IPL instead of this series. I think international cricket is dying to leagues such IPL.

Ahmed shehzad is curse I don't know what issue with Baber Azam when he faces medioker windies in tests
