KARACHI: Pakistan is going to start mango exports from May 20 this season, targeting shipment of 100,000 tons which is expected to fetch over $75 million, Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA) said on Monday.

PFVA Chairman Waheed Ahmed said the country had not met the previous export target due to a drastic fall of about 40% in mango production.

Mango trade: ‘Trade with South Korea on the decline’

The exporters, besides targeting traditional markets, will also try to tap new markets in China, Russia, Iran, Belarus and Middle Eastern countries. However, in the absence of much-needed vapour heat treatment (VHT) plant, the Japanese market will remain untapped for the third consecutive year.

The exporters had hardly exported 72,000 tons of mangoes last year, the lowest for the last five years. However, production is expected to be higher this season than the previous year and it may touch 1.6 million tons.

Pakistan has been exporting mangoes to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and European countries for many years and recently markets of South Korea, Japan, China, the US and Australia have been opened for the fruit.

However, due to lack of research, the country has been facing difficulties in competing in quality and standards.

Ahmed said the VHT plant, which had already been imported with an investment of millions of rupees, had been rusting for the past three years as the institutions concerned had yet to install it. By treating mango at the VHT plant, Pakistan can initially export more than 400 tons to Japan, increasing the volume to thousands in future.

Mangoes top the list of things i miss about PK . PK mangoes are quite expensive in Kuala lumpur .

Pakistani govt hasn't done enough to promote the export of world best Mangoes. Its such a shame that govt department waste public money on their luxury tours and don't tap potential markets. Also the infrastructure for mango cold chain was missing which is developing slowly.

i just got my first parcel from my ancestral village in Sindh yesterday!!
Mango Season is ON!!

Anyway, it is a good news. Work still need to be done to develop the transportation and cold storage facilities for Pakistani Mangoes. The crop have HUGE potential in export market and need to be properly worked at. Also we need to keep the good work up against mealybug and other pests that destroyed the mango export sector in past years.

Nooooooooo!! Now the good mangoes will be gone, such a shame but thumbs up for the export

I hope someone also consider developing value added industry for our agriculture products. Things like jams, nectar, juices from our fruits. Similarly make products from wheat and corn etc. That also have good market but will need more extensive marketing compared to raw fruits as they are These products will be easier to transport, easier to store, will add value to the product, create some jobs, increase the foreign exchange we will earn.

In BD most of the fruit sellers are dishonest. As a result it's very difficult to find season's fruits that are not tainted by formalin or other harmful chemicals. Usually I buy ripe mangoes from the grove owned by somebody I know.

Because there is no VHT plant, growers / traders are forced into these activities for survival.

Yes I have tasted many Indian, Pakistani and Mexican varieties but nothing comes close to the mangoes from my state.

Generally, most of the exports from India are Alphonso mangoes which are grown in the west coast of India. These have better shelf life and suitable for export.

If you get a chance following are the Indian varieties that you should try.

Thotapuri Mango - If you prefer raw unriped mangoes then look no further. These does not need salt and chilli power to go with it unlike other sour varieties that are used for pickles.

If you like ripes mangoes but do not like the fiber stuck in your teeth and prefer sliced mango to be eaten with a spoon or fork then go for "Banganapalli" mangoes. These are called the king of the mangoes for a reason.

Finally, If you the like to enjoy eating the whole Mango with no tools (just hands and mouth) then this is the one. It is called "Cheruku Rasaalu" literally meaning sugar cane juices as they so sweet. You have to squeeze the fruit with the hands and suck the juice from the top. These are huge and most people cannot eat the whole mango.

Finally the "Pacchadi kaya" literally meaning the pickle mango These are very sour are and suitable for the famous Andhra mango pickles.
