Wednesday, November 05, 2008
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will maintain a minimum credible deterrence level through conventional and strategic capabilities, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Tuesday. Talking to Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Tariq Majeed, Gilani said that Pakistan was playing a critical role for peace in the region and the world at large. The prime minister said the government would continue to pursue its policy of economic sovereignty, smooth political process, good neighbourliness, friendly international environment and good governance, as these were the prerequisites for impregnable defence of the country. He said the government was cognisant of the country's defence needs and would provide the necessary support to modernise the armed forces capabilities.
Gilani lauded the armed forces for undertaking timely relief activities along with the National Disaster Management Authority to ensure speedy provision of relief goods to the earthquake survivors in Balochistan.Gen Tariq briefed the prime minister about the implementation of the Armed Forces Development Plan. The plan envisages up-gradation and development of the armed forces, including indigenous defence production, equipment standardisation and measures for economising and optimising the resources. staff report
