Pakistan to induct 8 JF aircraft by year-end: Air Chief KAMRA, Pakistan, Jan 22 (APP): Pakistan’s Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed, Tuesday said PAF would induct 8 JF-17 Thunder aircraft by end of this year. Addressing the launching ceremony for manufacturing of JF-17 Thunder sub-Assemblies, marking formal assembling of the fighter aircraft, at Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), he said around 60 % of the frame of the aircraft and up to 80 % of the avionics to be fitted in the aircraft would be manufactured in the country by 2010. He said PAC has plans to make JF-17 Thunder the world's first weapon system that will be able to carry all types of conventional weapons targeting from air to air, air to ground, air to sea and to pound from the air. He said this state of the art, multipurpose, light combat aircraft, would be a complete combination of fighter and a weapon system which would also have optional capability to carry non-conventional weapons. He said PAF would induct 150 aircraft in its inventory in the first phase, in accordance with the already signed agreement with the Chinese company, cooperating Pakistan in assembling and manufacture of the aircraft. “Still we will require some 100 aircraft, as the PAC envisages to take the yearly assembling and manufacturing capability of the aircraft from the present 8 aircraft to 15, then up to 25 by 2011,” he said.(Posted @ 19:25 PST)

I am still curious as to what the final avionics package will be like.

Avionics will be same as per by the requirements of the PAF. Radar is just a thing for later fighters.

It seems PAF is looking for a much advanced radar.

ust a short summary on the above information that are not repeated in the interview

* Originally expected the Chinese radar to be KLJ-10, but that's not the case
* Galileo Avionica still wishes to win JF-17 contract due to their success with F-7PG. They believe that Pakistan is getting Chinese radar firm to fight out first and then getting the winner to fight out with Western radar firms.
* China has offered a weapon package of SD-10, LT-2 and LS-6, but PAF has yet to finalize on their plans.
* Starting from January 2008, PAC will produce 15-20 JF-17s per year. Current plan is 15 for 2008 and 20 for 2009. Finally hopes for 50% of JF-17 production in PAC.
* PAC wishes to be able to do repairs on RD-93 in the future.
* Pakistan wishes to eventually have a full digit quadriplex FBW system.
* Norinco displayed a 500kg LGB called GB-1 in IDEAS 2006, similar to Krasnopol, which they somehow developed for guiding artillery and aerial bombs.
* Norinco is not only trying to sell it for JF-17 but also A-5. At this point PAF thinks A-5 is about to retire, so has no interest in putting it on there.
* GB1 bomb is similar in out appearance to LT-2, but with different guidance.
* PAF got GBU-12 (paveway LGBs) from US and also the license production for GBU-12's laser guidance pod. LT-2 and GBU-12 are pretty much from the same generation, so LT-2 is facing "domestic" competition.

PAF to induct 8 JF-17 Thunder aircraft by year-end: Air chief

KAMRA: The Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed on Tuesday said the PAF would induct eight JF-17 Thunder aircraft by the end of this year.

Addressing the launching ceremony for manufacturing of JF-17 Thunder sub-Assemblies, marking formal assembling of the fighter aircraft, at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed said around 60 per cent of the frame of the aircraft and up to 80 per cent of the avionics to be fitted in the aircraft would be manufactured in the country by 2010.

He said the PAC had plans to make the JF-17 Thunder the world's first weapon system that will be able to carry all types of conventional weapons targeting from air to air, air to ground, air to sea and to pound from the air.

He said this state-of-the-art, multipurpose, light combat aircraft, would be a complete combination of fighter and a weapon system, which would also have optional capability to carry non-conventional weapons. He said the PAF would induct 150 aircraft in its inventory in the first phase, in accordance with the already signed agreement with the Chinese company, cooperating with Pakistan in assembling and manufacturing the aircraft.

"Still we will require some 100 aircraft, as the PAC envisages to take the yearly assembly and manufacturing capability of the aircraft from at present eight aircraft to 15, then up to 25 by 2011," he said. Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed said: "All JF-17 Thunders will be produced in Pakistan as the PAC has achieved the capability to assemble, paint the frame and aircraft besides conducting flight tests."

He said on March 23, (Pakistan Day) the indigenously assembled aircraft would take part in the fly past, a routine feature of the Pakistan Day parade of PAF. He said around 40 to 50 aircraft would have avionics of Chinese origin while in the next batch these would have indigenously developed avionics. He said in the next decade, the aircraft would be available for re-export through China and the share in the financial receipts would be paid to Pakistan.

After formal inauguration of the sub-assemblies of the aircraft, the air chief told media persons that the PAC in the next two years would achieve the capability to make the fighter a "warfare suite" that would match the needs of most of the countries in the sector.

He said the alphabets "J & F" included as title of the aircraft denoting "Joint Fighter" and "we will prove that this Joint Fighter is the best available in the market." He thanked the friendly country of China for extending all cooperation enabling Pakistan to achieve the cherished goal towards manufacturing of a fighter aircraft.

He said the JF-17 Thunder was a living example of Pakistan-China friendship and this will help further deepen the bonds existed between both the brotherly and friendly countries. Terming it a landmark achievement, he said it is not only a source of pride for Pakistan but also a measure of rare distinction for the country to have joined a selected group of nations having indigenous fighter aircraft production capability.

The project launched in 2000 has already made major strides, including first flight of prototype in August 2003, then in April 2004, and on May 10 2006 with fully integrated configurations.

Some very interesting information here.

"All JF-17 Thunders will be produced in Pakistan as the PAC has achieved the capability to assemble, paint the frame and aircraft besides conducting flight tests."

Phew!

Glad he clarified that - I know that some from our Eastern Neighbor were concerned we had to get Chinese technicians for that too! Well this should clarify that.

Bloody paindoo journalists -(not yo of course Jana Ji - aap kay liye tau ACM saray state secret bata datay hain).

And a post from Hkhan on a sister forum:

Few items that ACM said today which our media could write because they didn't know what the hell he was saying and second misquotations.

Here are few bullet points that ACM said:

1- PAF/PAC will receive another six JF-17 by the end of this month and early next month.

2- PAC will assemble all aircrafts for PAF

3- By 2010, PAC will manufacture 60% of the airframe, 70-80% of avionics and all the rest "including paint shaint..." will be performed.

4- These eight aircrafts will be used for testing of avionics and weapons systems

5- Presently, JF-17 has seven hardpoints and work has been progressing well to bring the number to nine.

6- By the end of 2008, one sqd of JF-17 will be operational equipped with 8-10 aircrafts

7- No engine problems and PAF will equip JF-17 with some very advance weapon system.

8- JF-17 is a fourth-generation aircraft

9- Two of current PAF F-16's have already arrived in the US for MLU

10- First Block 52+ will be delivered early 2009.

11- JF-17 will be equipped to lunch conventional and non-conventional weapons.

i am really excited about the fact that they are increasing the hard points to 9 which would atleast satisfy my gripe about the plane. At the mement the point ot note is the PAF will do 70-80% of the avionics at home. This might satisfy the rants of foreign powers about transfer of Technology (at least in principal!!) to China. The next question is weight reduction measures , more pwerful engine, and increased fuel carrying capacity(includingCFTs).This plane is turning out into a really nice one. On chinese Defence today,TPHuang pointed out that the chinese are interested in a Land attack version of thunder for which work is still carrying on in China. We are in for exciting days indeed.

Can somebody draw the comparison of JF-17 and Indian SU-30 MKI, who will be the winner in direct air to air combat.

Do these, JF-17, have (or will have), night interdiction capability.
I have seen Indians, proudly showing footages of laser guided missiles hitting tiger hills during Kargil conflict, fired by Mirage 2000. So, are these birds giong to have same capabilty or not?

First of all there is no comparision between a JF-17 and a SU. Both jets are meant for different purpose and serve for a very different environment( needs of both IA and PAF are different). So both the jets serve them very well. As for the night fighting capability, yes indeed it will have, obivious it will not perform just day missions, IR search and track will also be incooperated.

What about the training on new fighter.
Is there any 2 seat version or pilots from dual seater F-7P can fly it , straight?

Not sure if the F-7P guys can transit directly, but it will have the dual version for training.

ATTOCK, Jan 22: Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed has said that the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) is looking forward to achieving, within one year, the capacity of producing annually 15 JF-17 aircraft.

He was addressing the launching ceremony of JF-17 Thunder sub-assembly at the PAC, Kamra, on Tuesday. The ceremony marked yet another milestone in defence cooperation between Pakistan and China.

“On this momentous occasion, the PAF congratulates the countrymen on this singular success and reassures that the ‘Fazaia’ would always uphold the sacred trust of being a symbol of pride for the nation,” he said.

The air chief said that in two to three years the production capacity would be enhanced to 20-25 aircraft.

“I am also looking forward to setting up the first JF-17 operational conversion unit by the end of this year,” he said.

“I would like to remind everyone, especially, the personnel of PAC Kamra of the challenge and promise of success that lie ahead, as you embark upon the coveted goal of manufacturing,” he said.

“It is for you to seize the opportunity and make your nation proud,” he said.

The JF-17 Thunder project envisages co-production of the aircraft both in China and Pakistan. The objective of setting up JF-17 production facilities at the PAC is not only to enhance the PAF’s operational capability at affordable price but also to create employment opportunities for about 5,000 people.

The production of sub-assemblies would, subsequently, be expanded to encompass the parts manufacturing, final assembly and flight testing. Fighter aircraft manufacturing, he said, which was once a closely guarded realm of developed countries, “is now well within our reach.”

The success today stands on the foundations of the perseverance of our pilots, engineers and technicians and their Chinese counterparts.”

JF-17 Thunder aircraft is an advanced, multi-purpose, light combat aircraft, jointly developed by China and Pakistan.

It is a key collaboration strategic project between the two countries. The project has already made some big strides, achieving major milestones like the first flight of prototype aircraft, PT-01 in August, 2003, PT-03 in April, 2004, and PT-4, with fully integrated configuration, on May 10, 2006, taking the programme to a new height.

Later, PT-06 made its maiden flight in September, 2006, paving the way for smooth flight testing process.

In order to speed up the development progress and facilitate maturity of the aircraft, two JF-17 aircraft of the small batch production were received in Pakistan at a ceremony presided over by the president on March 21, last year.

Subsequently, these aircraft made their debut by participating in the National Day fly past on March 23.
