Pakistan to get ‘services’ denied to India

.
India will kill their services industry, that was SL govt's argument.

With pakistan they are safe, because SL will have more chance to do business unlike India.

.
Another Reason

Lankans fear that Indian professionals, including “barbers”, will flood Lanka in case services are included in bilateral economic agreements. But apparently, there is no fear of Pakistanis flooding the Lankan services market.

Quite a valid reason. Professionals and barbers have high value jobs and they need no go out of Pakistan unlike unemployment prone India.

Credit must go to rulers like Sherif.

.
Makes sense..Indian is good in service sector..and India has a huge population which is ready to go any country to earn money....So for Sri Lanka it makes perfect economic sense to not provide this access to India which might impact their labor market...

. .
Jahalat ki hadd hai ye !

Some people still imagine of barbers when asked them about Services.

Banking, Insurance and Software Development are unthinkable to them.

Lol.. I dont think you got the gist of that comment

.
Fair dinkum but also because..

"Lankans fear that Indian professionals, including “barbers”, will flood Lanka in case services are included in bilateral economic agreements."

There are already issues with illegal Indian workers and tradesmen abusing the Visa on arrival facility provided to SAAC nations

Dont know about that .
But AFAIK in our state immigrant labouerss are engulfing our barber shops

Thats just rhetoric emanating from those groups oppose to CEPA, What it means is issue of semi skilled Indians overwhelming the labour market in Sri Lanka, Not specific to Barbers.. Lol

Already this has become an issue with illegal Indian immigrant workers employed in agriculture, certain manufacturing and low skilled service sectors.. Hundreds get caught and deported every month, More slip through the authorities.. Not easy to differentiate Indians from the local populace especially in the North and East

The issue is Indian Migrant workers are willing to work for lesser pay and more hours than locals, Also since they're not registered nor have any legal rights they're exploited as well

On the contrary for Sri Lankan citizens they have some of the strongest labor rights in the region, The trade Unions are so strong sometimes you wonder if anything gets done in the country without someone protesting.. So some of those who employ Indians prefer them

.
Lankans dont want tamils from india come to Sri lanka and then claim to be tamils of Sri lanka

Govt should reform Labor Laws in SL then, in today's market there are only six ways to gain an competitive advantage:

1. Technological Edge - Like US, Japan, Western Europe does in high tech sector.
2. Economies of Scale and supporting infrastructure - China
3. Cheap Labor and Land - India, Vietnam, Bangladesh
4. Resource Exclusiveness - Gulf, Russia for oil
5. Tax friendly - Tax Havens such as Monaco, Ireland, Cayman's, Mauritus.
6. Geostrategic Location on key Trade Routes - Dubai, Singapore, Hongkong

Srilanka has to find it's edge.

. .
The reason for this is that while India’s economic presence in Lanka is widespread and heavy, the Pakistani presence is negligible. The India-Lanka bilateral trade amounts to US$4.6 billion with Lanka being a much smaller partner accounting for US$720 million. In the case of Pakistan, the total bilateral trade is itself only US$354 million with Pakistani exports accounting for US$280 million. While India has US$2 billion worth of investments in Lanka, Pakistan has virtually none.

The reason.

Obvious because India is Sri Lanka's neighbour just like Afghanistan is Pakistan's neighbour and our trade is more than yours.

.
Has already set the ball rolling, Logistical hub status for the region

Can you elaborate what advantage does Sri-Lanka offer in this regard? Which countries Srilanka would be connecting or re-supplying incoming vessels to considering India has it's own ports in region not too far away and SL population itself is too small to justify investment.

Don't take it the wrong way - this is a genuine question as I am ignorant of the port economics and container handling data in Sri-Lanka. I assuming SL does not want to lease it's port to PLAN so not taking defence dimension into picture.

.
Sri Lanka is free to do what it feels serves their economic and strategic interests, same as any other country. It is good development for Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
