  • The brain damaging Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, India, has claimed 18 lives thus far
  • Pakistan has achieved a bumper crop of potatoes, onions and chilies that could easily meet demand, said Waheed Ahmed, vice president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry
KARACHI: Pakistan could double its fruit and vegetable exports to Arab Gulf countries that have banned imports from India due to an outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus, said Waheed Ahmed, vice president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI).
On May 30, Kuwait followed the UAE and Bahrain in banning fruit and vegetable imports from India until further notice.
Indian media report that the virus outbreak has so far claimed 18 lives, while nearly 1,945 people are under medical supervision.
“Pakistan already has a presence in Middle Eastern markets, and following the ban on Indian products, exports could double depending on demand and our capacity to meet that demand,” Ahmed told Arab News.
The brain-damaging virus has affected the Indian state of Kerala, from where some 150 tons of fruits and vegetables are exported to Gulf countries daily.
Pakistan has achieved a bumper crop of potatoes, onions and chillies that could easily meet demand, Ahmed said.
“Pakistan already exports large quantities of mangos to Gulf countries. This ban may increase those exports even more,” he added.
As Indian authorities struggle to contain the Nipah outbreak, there are reports of a second one.
The virus was first detected in Malaysia in 1998, in the village from which it takes its name. This is the third outbreak in India. The previous ones occurred in 2001 and 2007.
The World Health Organization has included Nipah in its list of diseases most likely to result in a global pandemic, alongside Ebola and Zika.

but its not good news we shear border with india and this thing can cross border
True, viruses can spread much easier these days. But, if the virus is only in Kerala for now, does it make a difference if that state is not right at the border?

Or, perhaps we got lucky the last two times India had it in 2001 and 2007, as noted above.

Nipah virus doesn't inflict and damages brainless or brain dead people...good that so many Indians are saved there in Kerala and elsewhere in India due to this factor.

@Karna_007 hope you are doing well....

You should not worry too much about me and we are not brain dead people like you, who mock on others miseries, be it in any country ! There is no chance that you will get infected, as Virus only affects those who have brain !

Kerala exports mostly bananas and cashews to the gulf. Pakistan wants to replace that with onions and chilis. Very smart thinking.

.
Well good to see Pakistan making some sales , and hopefully the folks next door resolve their lethal virus issue

Outbreak of Nipah virus in Kerala state tied to decision taken by MoCI

KUWAIT CITY, June 5: Following the decision taken by Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) to ban the import of fruits and vegetables from India due to the outbreak of Nipah virus, Pakistan hopes that the import of fruits and vegetables from Pakistan to Kuwait will double, reports geo.tv.com quoting Vice- President of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI).

He highlighted the warning issued by Kuwait’s Food Safety Department concerning the risk posed by Nipah virus to the lives of human beings and animals. Nipah virus has so far killed 13 people in Kerala, India, and infections are allegedly spreading throughout Kerala and other states in South India.

However, there are no confirmed cases of the virus outside the state of Kerala. Among the 116 suspected cases sent for testing recently by Kerala, 13 died, 15 have been confirmed with the deadly disease and two are undergoing treatment. According to a committee from Public Authority for Food and Nutrition in Kuwait, outbreak of the rare brain-damaging Nipah virus in Kerala was the reason why Ministry of Commerce and Industry took such a decision. In this regard, Undersecretary of Ministry of Health Dr Mustafa Redha said, “The ministry will take immediate precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of Nipah virus in the country”.

World Health Organization (WHO) stated that there is no vaccine for the virus which spreads through body fluids and can cause inflammation of the brain, or encephalitis. The United Arab Emirates had earlier imposed a ban on import of fruits and vegetables from Kerala due to the same reason, suspecting that fruit bats are the source of virus. Since bats prefer fruits such as mangoes, dates and bananas, fresh produce especially these fruits from India have been banned in the UAE.

Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE also notified other local authorities including the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) and the municipalities of its emirates to prevent the entry of any fresh produce from Kerala. Health officials in India have not yet been able to track the source of the outbreak. They launched a new set of tests on fruit bats in Perambra, which is the suspected epicenter of the infection. Considering this ban on fresh produce from India to these Arabian Gulf countries, Pakistan is now hoping that exports of fruits and vegetables from Pakistan would consequently double in volume.

The virus is already stopped. All those who're infected came in contact with patient zero.

State will be declared virus free within two months, hopefully.
