The Ministry of Textile Industry, Government of Pakistan, will get technical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in augmenting capacity building of garment technology institutes, in imparting vocational training to women, and in marketing.
This was revealed during a meeting between JICA Director General and Pakistan’s Minister of Textile Industry Abbas Khan Afridi in Islamabad.
During the meeting, JICA representatives informed the Minister that they have identified three initiatives, one each at the Ministry of Textile Industry, at the Pakistan Knitwear Training Institute--Lahore, and the Faisalabad Garment City. However, the formalities at their end are yet to be completed and these initiatives are likely to begin in 2015.
Mr. Afridi said JICA’s support would be important for Pakistan, as the upcoming Textile Policy 2014-19 would have skill development and export promotion as its main focus.
Talking to members of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) in Karachi last week, Mr. Afridi said the skill development programme in the upcoming textile policy aims at making skilled workforce available to the country’s textile industry and make the industry more competitive in the global market.
As per the yet to be announced scheme, the Ministry of Textile Industry would bear all the cost of imparting training, including stipend to the trainees and raw material cost.
An amount of Pk Rs. 4.4 billion has been set aside for the programme, which would train about 120,000 youth over the next five-year period. During the training programme, likely to be of four-to-six month duration, each trainee would be given a stipend of Rs. 8,000 per month.
