"Pakistan targets export market for low-cost missiles"

PAKISTAN launched a new marketing campaign for the sale of its 'Baktar Shikan' anti-tank missile and the ANZA-MKII anti-aircraft missile this month, seeking to capture customers from countries in the surrounding region. The two missiles - on display at the IDEAS 2006 international arms conference in Karachi, were described by one Pakistani official as "the poor man's choice of weapon" - a reference to their relatively low price in comparison to Western defence equipment. The 'Baktar Shikan' is a licensed copy of the Chinese HongJian-8 (HJ-8) or the Red Arrow 8, developed by China's NORINCO as a semi-active, wire-guided anti-tank missile

Pleasing to see that Pakistan is striving to carve out a niche in the 3 Trillion$ Arms Bazaar. We need to make every effort to increase our exports to any willing buyer within a legal frame work and in persuance of our own strategic and commercial interests.

How come ? The largest export for the last year was from Russia in the vicinity of $7 or 8 billion. The combined total of all arm exporting countries do not reach even $100 billion a year. Are you sure Arz? :)

could the experts please tell me where is India in all this context?
i mean how much does India export? what are India's plans for the future?
India has many more weapon systems, etc than many many countries, then why are we not active in this field?

jingoism would be well avoided in the replies, namely by certain individuals that India is this or that, it cant produce weapons, a critical introspection report would be very welcome :)

Kashif As Salam o Alaikum.
Please read the opening Para of the relevant news item courtesy of Zee News in Post 179 on IDEAS defence exhibition on Pak def. Info posted by Munir. I have quoted their figures. One of the problems for me is to go back and find the relevant news sections prior to quoting them, as I have to trawl through three or 4 forums which I visit. This is the reason for the delay. I can also not say where they got there source from to quote such figures. I hope this is helpful.

PS: I knew I was right but like all things my memory is fading with age.;)

@Cheetah, i read in some forum eqtiquettes thingy long back that its always better to continue in an existing threat than start a new one, if you can manage it. I read these thigns in gamers forum, for UT :P

well...these reports mean that India is only now trying to sell its products actively.

The projects such as Mayawi and Brahmos are sure gonna be a huge hit.
I know that many countries have expressed interest in ALH. What do you guys recokon?

Well MM i think the problem is that the products are in a awkward spot.

They are higher tech (and hence very close in price to some western systems. the Arjun is an example of this) so are either gonna be too costly for smaller or poorer governments. Or they will lose out to western systems for the higher end of the market.

I think that weapon systems like MANPADs etc., would be the type of stuff to create a niche in. Medium tech is basically where Pakistan and India can operate.

I think a bigger problem for Pakistan and India with regards to advanced weapon systems is that these are done with a lot of partners and integration. For a third party to buy such major weapon systems, they would typically like a single source for maint/upgrades etc. etc. Now if the engine is German, the FCS is French etc., this poses some logistical as well as geo-political challenges. This is the current problem with the defence industry in both countries.

Pakistan and India are both in a situation where the very high tech components like engines, FCSs etc., have to be imported for their own indiginous weapon systems. This is a scary proposition for a third country looking to buy from them.

Pakistan needs to screen the buyers very carefully. Would be a shame if these were to fall into the hands of terrorists; say Somali War Lords and they use these missiles to take a pot shot at civilian airliners.

Remember Mulla Rockety episode, the Pashtun warlord who collected money both from CIA and ISI but sold the Stingers to Iran. When PA went inside the Pushtoon belt and arrested his brother;he threatened to blow PIA planes out of the sky if his relations weren't released by PA.

Any updates?

pakistan needs to acquire rapid technology for new anti-tank missiles and new anza type most like Anza 4 and Anza 5 should be in pipeline!!!!
