KARACHI: Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir has said that despite all the problems, Pakistan is set to achieve its target of an additional $1 billion exports to the European Union (EU) after getting the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) Plus scheme.

“I am very satisfied by the growth of our exports to the EU in the first eight months (Jan-Aug 2104),” he said while speaking to the representatives of the value-added textile sector at the PHMA house.

“This is encouraging for all of us as it is slightly beyond the expected growth target that the ministry of commerce had set last year,” he added.

This government is notorious for revising its own targets and then celebrating under-achievement. I can't find the source now but this GSP status was supposed to increase our exports in textiles, leather, surgicals etc by much more.

If private sector has managed to get extra $1 Billion despite energy shortages, imagine what it could have been if energy, law & order were sorted out.

Very encouraging if true, this govt is not my favorite - but as Pakistanis we must get out of partizan politics, positive developments benefit the entire nation.

Our primary exports are apparel/textiles and then some other finished goods. Without energy to run those industries we cannot export anything. Fix energy issues, exports will rise automatically.

IT is also slowly making it's mark.

I doubt it, industries are not getting gas/electricity to run at full potential.
