ISLAMABAD, (The News): The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was stunned to learn that two Pakistani scientists who had developed the cheapest injection against Hepatitis were harassed and instead costly injections were imported causing Rs70 billion loss to the national exchequer.

The Ministry of Science and Technology launched an inquiry through the FIA against one of the scientists for embezzlement of funds while the other was denied salary for two years and in the process more than 100,000 injections, which were manufactured locally and meant to inoculate against Hepatitis, expired.

Acting chairperson of the committee MS Yasmeen Rehman said she has written to the Supreme Court to punish the culprits. The FIA inquiry has given a clean chit to the scientist and dismissed allegations against him.

The PAC in its meeting on Tuesday decided to approach the Supreme Court against the officials who sabotaged the production of locally made drug Interferon that cost only Rs70 to facilitate the multinational companies who were selling the same drug for Rs900.

The Public Accounts Committee also referred the matter to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for investigation against those officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology who sabotaged the production of Interferon. The committee assigned Khawaja Asif to take up this issue before the Supreme Court.

The PAC directed NAB to investigate who was responsible for wasting 100,000 injections and report back to the committee within six weeks.

Dr Riazuddin, the project director and one of the scientists who developed the locally made Interferon was harassed as former secretary science and technology Nadeem Irfan stopped the project and asked the FIA to probe the scientists for embezzlement of funds. However, the FIA gave Dr Riazuddin a clean chit.

The PAC has constituted a committee headed by renowned scientist Dr Samar Mubarkmand and comprising secretary science and technology Ikhlaq Chatta and the secretary Higher Education Commission to probe the technical side and report back to the committee within 15-days.

On the recommendation of PML-N’s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the PAC also decided to write a letter to Dr Riazuddin appreciating his achievements. The committee also decided to write a letter of appreciation to the FIA team for their excellent probe.

Dr Riazuddin told the committee that his name was still on the Exit Control List though he was cleared by the FIA. On this, the PAC directed the interior ministry to remove Dr Riazuddin’s name from the ECL.

Dr Riazuddin also informed the PAC that another scientist who worked with him to develop Interferon has not received his salary for the last two years. The PAC directed Iklhlaq Chatta to release his salary immediately.

Ms Yasmeen Rehman said during the investigation it was also revealed that Irfan Nadeem forged documents and lied to the Supreme Court that the NA standing committee has ordered investigations against Dr Riazuddin. “I wrote a letter to inform the Supreme Court that the standing committee never asked for probe against Dr Riazuddin,” she said.

She said so far 28,000 drugs were being denied registration on the pressure of multinational companies.Akram Masih Gill of the PML-Q said no scientist wanted to work with the Ministry of Science and Technology given this atmosphere.

this is big news, If the culprit is actually punished.

Hopefully something good would come out of it.

Im sure there was someone somewhere connected to general kernal mafia or political parties benefiting immensely from the import of foreign made hepatitis injections. And used his influence to further his business interests!

Welcoming decision from Pakistan. Before commenting ,Have people heard about GMP(good manufacturing practice) and its procedures?

I'm cursing those m0f0's bad bad:angry:

Local manufacturers should be given top priority & national wealth must not be spend on what Pakistan can produce/manufacture locally, why can't these dumbs get this in their fat brains.

Forget about someone influential getting caught.

If its some retired military man, the military would say dont deride us or else..

If its civilian, it will be that typical playing victim.
