PESHAWAR: Pakistan said Monday that a Taliban commander with a 234,000-dollar price on his head had been killed in a shootout with soldiers in the country's notorious North Waziristan region.

The military said Ameerullah Mehsud was one of the top commanders in the Pakistani Taliban, the group blamed for some of the deadliest bomb attacks of a three-year campaign that has killed more than 3,400 people.

He also went by the alias of Qari Gud, which means “the man who limps”, and Mazloomyar, which means “friend of the oppressed” in the Pashtu language.

Mehsud was shot dead at a security checkpoint in Miramshah, the main town of North Waziristan, where Pakistani commanders have felt under increasing US pressure to launch a decisive campaign against militant strongholds.

“His head money was 20 million rupees. Two soldiers were also wounded in the shootout,” the military said in a statement. – AFP

There will be another 'Mehsud' to take the place. This will continue until we finish off the king makers. The king makers can create thousands of 'Mehsud' at will. Therefore, the focus should be placed on the king makers. A primitive tribal chief is not the issue.

How many Mehsuds are there. This is why we have to put in birth control measures, especially in such backward places as FATA. Lets hope that this is the last of the Mehsud tribe.

I think Mehsud's got a big kick in the a*s from the Army, they haven't done anything in a while. Now its the particular new Punjabi Taliban gangs assembling, I hope Pakistan is cautious so they don't develop as much as TTP did.

Well their best bet would be to start near the rural areas bordering DI Khan... It will be very important to keep an eye on what is going on in places like Mankera.

It is usually the smaller, quite places that serve as regional hubs for this dogs. Mankera or Bhakkar would also give them access to DI Khan, Mianwali and the ability to move into central punjab from the south.

Inshallah, there will be a special suprise waiting for them. Inshallah!

These Mehsuds are only symbols. The real works are done by some other people. A primitive tribal chief is given some financial benefit to let his name used as the phoney Emir of the of the self proclaimed Islamic Emirate of fantasy. The dynamo of all of these is based in the urban areas elsewhere inside Pakistan with political impunity. Unfortunately, the government is not powerful enough to take necessary political decisions on it's own to deal with the militancy. If it wants to be tough , there will be further backlash from the Chief justice and GHQ. I saw that some people were asking the CJ to intervene without knowing that constitutionally, there is a separation between the executive and judiciary branches. CJ has no right to interfere in executive matters as much executive branch can not interfere in the judiciary.

One thing. What was he doing at a checkpoint? Collecting "Jagga Tax" or paying it? He came over to the army and got shot. A fitting end
