I believe that discussions with Pakistan on terrorism is an utter waste of time. Pakistanis, most of them either believe in their conspiracy theories or will simply use such theories cynically for denial. The GoP & the rest of the state is no different. Pointless to expect any sort of help; actually stupid to expect that. No one is about to help with an investigation which can only point towards oneself; actually an investigation would not even be necessary since what happened is already known to the participants, many of whom are part of the state.

I don't believe however that it was necessary to go through this sorry charade in a full media glare. What was needed was a quiet recalibration in the approach to be taken, not this public tom-toming of Jundal's confession, What purpose is actually served with this exposure, other than giving characters like Rehman Malik a chance to rub even more salt with stupid theories of his own, is beyond me. This is a state & a people determined to brazen it out, no matter how outrageous the stories are becoming. They, imo just do not live in the same reality as us or anyone else. Not even sure that reality as a concept is understood, atleast in the terms the rest of the world understands. Even if they perceive reality, it is an altered one having no bearing to what we experience, a reality altered by the absurd situation they find themselves in. Simply pointless to engage them on this score.

To put things crudely, none of the pepetrators are out of our reach should we really choose to go that route. But that does not really count. India has always been good at looking at the bigger picture, and the picture is progressively getting murkier for our friends next door. NEW DELHI: While Pakistan's claim of 40 Indians being involved in the 26/11 attacks might look like posturing when the heat is on, agencies interrogating Mumbai attacks handler Syed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal haven't ruled out the possibility of some Indians being actually involved — even though peripherally.

Sources said some Indians, part of a Lashkar sleeper module, may have been involved in terms of reconnaissance and channelizing of finances when the conspiracy had not reached operational level.

"There may have been some elements who assisted LeT operative David Coleman Headley during his reconnaissance between 2006 and 2008. Some operatives may also have provided independent reconnaissance and information useful for planning the attack. Logistical support in terms of finances and other help could also have been channelized through some indoctrinated Indians. However, there is no Indian involved directly in the attacks," said an official privy to Jundal's interrogation.

Sources, however, said Jundal has not been forthcoming on this issue and has not provided any information on involvement of any Indian directly or peripherally in the attacks.

For instance, the late Hassan Gafoor, Mumbai police commissioner during the attacks, had claimed shortly after the strike that 16 Indians were involved in providing logistical support.

In an on-record conversation with the media, Gafoor had said 16 Indians, who were all from north India, had had some role to play in the attacks. He had said these 16 did not include LeT operatives Fahim Ansari and Sabuddin Ahmed, arrested by Mumbai crime branch for conducting reconnaissance for the 26/11 attacks.

When a startled media had asked Gafoor whether it could say that for the first time Mumbai Police was claiming some sort of local involvement in the attacks, he had replied, "Mumbai Police is not claiming this. It is a fact."

As the news made headlines, within half an hour, Gafoor backtracked from his statement, telling the media that there was no local involvement apart from Fahim and Sabauddin. He tried to explain that what he meant was involvement of certain people who acted much earlier.

Fahim and Sabauddin were later acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.

At the time of the attacks, it was argued that it was not possible for the 10 terrorists to have reached some of the remote targets, such as Nariman House in Colaba, without some kind of local support. Mumbai crime branch, which was investigating the attacks, had rubbished the theory then, saying the attackers had videos of routes and precise information of locations provided through meticulous reconnaissance.
