Islamabad: Pakistan and Russia will sign a $10-billion offshore gas pipeline deal today in Moscow.
Russia has nominated Public Joint Stock Company Gazprom to conduct a feasibility study. A delegation of Petroleum Division has been dispatched to the Russian capital after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Asian countries.

Inter State Gas Systems (ISGS) – a state-owned company of Pakistan established to handle gas import projects and is already working on gas pipeline schemes like Tapi, has been nominated by Pakistan to execute the offshore pipeline project along with Gazprom.

ISGS is also working on the $10-billion Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (Tapi) gas pipeline to connect South and Central Asia and construction work on the scheme in Pakistan will start in March next year.

According to the agreement, Pakistan is expected to buy some 500 million to 1 billion cubic foot from Russia daily.

The underwater pipeline will be completed in three to four years.

Russia currently exports huge quantities of gas to Europe and Turkey. This project is an alternate for Russia in case those exports go cold. Despite the US sanctions, Russia has been a major exporter of energy to Europe.

Amid a long-running tussle with Europe and the United States over the annexation of Ukrainian region of Crimea, Russia is looking for alternative markets and wants to capitalise on the growing energy demand in South Asia.

Russia, which controls and manages huge gas reserves in energy-rich Iran, plans to export gas by laying an offshore pipeline through Gwadar Port to Pakistan and India, which are seen as alternative markets because Moscow fears it may lose energy consumers in Europe over the Crimea stand-off.

Interesting developments. Kinda predicted it when the government suddenly came up with 146 percent hike in gas prices.

TAPI and IPI seems to be of utmost priority of the new government since the pre election promise of employment hike.

Is ISGS hiring?

Pakistan can easily get plenty of gas from Iran at half the price. The huge cost of liquefying gas and transporting by ship to Karachi is a big waste. Iran is next door and can supply cheap gas without any overhead of shipping or liquefying cost.

Unwarranted hostility with Iran is the reason why Pakistan is not getting gas from Iran.

US won't let us do it so as Saudia Arab. Saudia Arab will stop their subsidized oil for us than. So getting gas from Iran is a zero sum game as compared to the setup which we have it now. May be years down the line, we can directly cooperate with Iran over it.

Iran is not willing to reduce price, Otherwise Iran was good option as next to door. Also U.S.A just resuming support coalition funds, we will receive 300 million dollar this year, And Saudi investing 10 billion dollar, many factors involved they will stop deals or stop investing.

KSA has no issues with Russia, why would they do so ?

.
there is no hostility btw Pakistan-Iran .. The real issue is yankee sanctions, and maybe GCC pressure.
The reason is simple. USA. Any attempt to build the pipeline would atttract massive US sanctions tipping Pakistan's already stressed economy and public finances. Also GCC and Saudia would also throw a tempter tantrum. And just to clarify -

  • Pakistan is not recieving any oil subsidy from KSA.
  • Pakistan has not get any $10 billion dollars from KSA.
It is amazing how much bullshat can stick around as facts.

KSA has no issues with Russia, why would they do so ?
They do via their buddy USA. Trump relies on his mates the Saudi royal family to keep Putin's nuts from inflating too much. How so? Russia is oil energy power. Most of the Russian recovery from the old days under Boris Yeltsin has taken place because of healthy oil and gas revenues. Americans rely on KSA/GCC to manipulate the oil market to check Putin's ambitions as increased supply by KSA causes the oil price to drop and shutting down most of the Russian oil fields.

Saudi oil is amongst cheapest in world to produce and export. Russian oil from Siberia is expensive to produce and being far from markets is even more expensive to export. Thus KSA can increase oil production, causing the price to drop to the point where Russian oil fields begin to shut down as cost equals retail price. KSA can still make profit. American's use this oil weapon via Saudia Arabian against Russia when needed to cramp Putin.

$10b is confirmed by every PTI MNA on local talk shows but its part of CPEC investment. Details will be revealed next week officially.
Well, that is most welcome but factually it is not $10 billion being handed over. But of course it is still great news. However I will wait to actually see that investment. If very every Memorundum of Understanding over the years had been applied Pakistan would have been a first world country. Don't forget governments tend to sex up the reality. They can't say we went to KSA. Dined. Saw holy sites. Hugged the royals. And came home.

I think KSA is looking for other powers as well ... They are contacting russia and china for advancs weapons ... Ksa no longer can individually influence oil market to the level to close russian production ... US and Canadian oils specially shale gas are much more expensive then russia therefore they will be the first to close down ...

Honestly I don't think so. The level to which KSA is buying weapons from USA tells me the now famous House of Saud alliance with USA struck in 1930s will continue. This figure is almost equivalent to 20 years of combined Pakistan exports. This does not not look like "looking" more like they [KSA] have their, nose firmly up the backside of USA.

US-Saudi Arabia seal weapons deal worth nearly $110 billion immediately, $350 billion over 10 years

Like this $10b pipeline, I have serious doubt about it.

In a hypothetical world if I became Prime Minister of Pakistan which country do you think I would visit first. Sense would suggest China. But no. Saudia Arabia. Reason is simple. The majority of Pakistan is made of simple, ignorants. Thet equate Islam with KSA and Saudi royal family the banner. As most Pakistani are religious this weighs on them heavily. So as a sop to majority of the [ignorant] masses I would go to KSA. Take photo ops with the royals, visit holy sites, generally scrub and rub my shoulders with high/mighty of KSA. Tal $10 billion here. $10 billion there. Let that sound of billions rebverbrate in Pakistan; and then come back.

Now brag do !

A great move!!!! Make Pak the hub of the crucial trade, business, investment, energy etc. routes for the Great Powers!!! And, make them the stakeholders!!! And, go for the scums within Afganistan with all the might possible!!!! It's a changed world, so the policies need to be changed too by taking the gloves, sleeves, shirts etc. off and showing the bare muscles lying dormant underneath....

Hodri Meydan...

*The alternative is too bleak!! It's like becoming "termites"....
