ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday ruled out any role for India in Afghanistan, as it seeks to develop regional consensus to bring an end to the 17-year-long war in the neighbouring country.

“There is no role for India in Afghanistan,” was the response from Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal when asked whether New Delhi had any role in the Afghan reconciliation process.

The remarks at a weekly briefing appear to contradict Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s statement earlier this month in the National Assembly in which he said Indian cooperation was needed for the Afghan endgame.

Speaking on the floor of the house, Qureshi had said that bringing peace in Afghanistan was a shared responsibility and hence Pakistan could not accomplish this job alone.

For this purpose, the foreign minister added, support of regional countries, including India, was required. “Since India is present in Afghanistan, its cooperation in this regard will also be required,” the minister further said.

His statement was seen as a possible shift in Pakistan’s policy as it in the past opposed any role for India in Afghanistan.

But the latest statement by the Foreign Office spokesperson suggested that Pakistan still maintained its stated position.

The United States, nevertheless, wanted India to play a greater role in Afghanistan; something Pakistan viewed with suspicion.

Pakistan believes that India is playing the role of a ‘spoiler’ because of its secret agencies’ growing footprint in Afghanistan.

Faisal’s statement came at a time when efforts are under way to seek a political solution to the Afghan problem. Pakistan recently brokered direct talks between Afghan Taliban representatives and the US in Abu Dhabi.

Following those negotiations, Foreign Minister Qureshi undertook a four-nation tour to seek greater regional consensus on Afghanistan.

One of the main objectives of Qureshi’s visit to Afghanistan, Iran, China and Russia was to strengthen regional consensus on Afghanistan that the key for medium to long term sustainability of an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned solution, according to Faisal.

Pakistan is nobody to decide that. Nobody outside Pakistan gives any real value to it's decisions or stance whether on Kashmir or Afghanistan.
Pakistanis can deny this all they want but it is the cold hard truth.

India has positioned itself in Afghanistan so well and brilliantly that the main pointmen of the both peace process' in Afghanistan are coming running to India to please Modi & Doval:
On 6th Jan 2019, pro India Zalmay Khalilzad (US special envoy for Afghanistan and main US pointman for Afghan peace process) is visiting India for three days to meet Doval & Modi.

On 21st December Zamir Kabulov (Russian special envoy for Afghanistan and pointman of Moscow peace process) visited India to take India's advice.

Similarly the EU led Belgium conference on Afghanistan also invited India as a main participant.

So now India has successfully made itself permanent stakeholder in Afghanistan something which was unthinkable just 19 years back .

Oh but Pakistan everyone to decide that and we have decided that and guess what China, Russia have already backed Pakistan's initiative while US has decided to simply move out. So keep dreaming while the world moves on.
Russia has not backed anything regarding Indian role in Afghanistan. They themselves sent their special envoy for Afghanistan to India twice in less than a year and Also invited India as a main participant in Moscow Afghanistan conference.

Plus US is not withdrawing from Afghanistan.
Forget withdrawal even the troop reductions plans were made up rumors.

Any evidence that they are rumours?

Reality is, we do. If there was ANY semblence of truth in what you just said then the Taliban would have been defeated long ago. 18 years later, 100s of billions of dollars wasted, the american superpower is worn out and desperate to leave. Especially with so much domestic problems in america now. The best thing the americans can hope for is that the Taliban don't fully scupper american interests there. The key to long term peace in afghanistan and the full withdrawal of american forces lies with Pakistan. The americans have come to terms with the inevitable demise of the NA and the rise of the Taliban.

:blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah:

Welcome to reality . Pakistan will dictate in what happens next in Afghanistan, do whatever you can. You can cry as much as you want.

Pakistan has taken all the major stake holders into confidence i.e Iran, Russia, China. India shares no border with Afghanistan. You only bring terrorism to the region, keep that at home. Nobody wants Indian role in Afghanistan.

Taliban have already been defeated. US Commander General Miller revealed this week that Taliban casualties are even worse than ANSF.
Taliban do not control a single city or town in Afghanistan. Taliban failed to even take the small city of ghazni this year.
Taliban has only one choice now accept US permanent presence in Afghanistan to get a peace deal or be forever be a useless guerilla movement like FARC or Al Shabbab
