Pakistan resists capitulating to new US demands

US to pressure new govt for fresh operation

SHAIQ HUSSAIN

ISLAMABAD -The PPP-led coalition may have to face a tough challenge immediately after forming the government as the Bush administration is most likely to come up with the demand for fresh military operations in tribal areas coinciding with the ‘spring offensive’ of coalition forces in Afghanistan against the al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants.
The NATO-led coalition forces in Afghanistan are vigorously preparing for the major onslaught against Taliban in the days to come.
“What the United States and its allied nations would like Pakistan to do in this regard would be to start new military operations on its side of Afghan border in Waziristan and other troubled areas to block the cross border movement of militants,” said a diplomatic sources requesting anonymity.
According to source, it would be the real test for new Pakistani government as how to respond to the US demand for fresh military operations in the face of strong public opinion here against the use of force in the restive tribal belt.
A Pakistani official when asked about possible reaction by Islamabad to Washington’s demand, said while asking not to be named that being the major political forces, PPP and PML-N would definitely prefer dialogue instead of force in Waziristan and elsewhere.
However, at the same time it would be difficult to reject the demand for new offensive by the United States. Hence, he said that great challenges await the new government right from the very beginning.
He said that initial comments by the PPP and PML-N top leadership on war against terror in which they talked about tackling the global menace through dialogue were not received well in Washington’s ruling circles.
