BSF seeks flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers to get the trooper back
Efforts are on to bring back an Indian trooper who entered Pakistan after being swept away in the Chenab River in Jammu district, sources said on Thursday.

“Pakistan Rangers have confirmed that the trooper is in their custody. We have sought a flag meeting to get the trooper back,” a Border Security Force source said.

Satyasheel Yadav was part of a water patrol party in Akhnoor area of the international border in Jammu and Kashmir.

He was swept away in the river after their motor boat developed a mechanical fault on Wednesday, BSF sources told IANS in Jammu.

“While three of his colleagues swam to safety, Yadav was carried to the Pakistani side by the powerful currents of the river,” the source added.

The incident took the trooper to Bajwat area in Sialkot area in Pakistan.

Jammu:The Director General(DG) of Pakistan Rangers on Thursday said that they will soon return the Border Security Force (BSF) soldier who was swept away by strong currents of the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir and was captured by them.

"I want to say that we are returning the solider soon. Verification process is on and multiple agencies Ministry of Interior, ISI and Military Intelligence are verifying the antecedent. To us everything is okay and hopefully he will be returned soon," said the DG.

Director General BSF DK Pathak on Wednesday said, "formalities are being done and we are hopeful that Pakistan Rangers will release our soldier in a couple of hours."

Very Sane reaction from the DG Rangers regarding this. Of course; the Pakistani side will want to verify all the facts and stated explanations first. Which seem to be 'prima facie' valid otherwise. As our colleague here, @waz has convincingly explained on the other thread.

Yes, I'm glad all things have turned out well. Hopefully he will be back soon. Thank you for the mention and kind words.

Also I would like to know what the hell is up with the desi obsession in swimming in waters that have very fast flowing currents, like the Indus and Chenab. You literally have a death wish in doing so. I did the same thing many years ago when I was in my early 20's and got swept down a mile....I swore never again.

You possibly have no idea of the terrain in question.

The Chenab is a very fast flowing river, the part when it enters Pakistan upto Marala HW the current is the strongest as it has just hit the plains.

Indian positions are on both banks , here are the facts of this case :

"
Officials said the trooper, identified as Satyasheel Yadav of the water wing of the border guarding force, was out on a patrol with three other personnel in the Paragwal-Khour sub-sector of general area Akhnoor along the Line of Control when the boat they were travelling in developed a problem.

They said that when the patrol squad was negotiating a narrow bend in the river in this sector, the engine of the motorboat failed.

A rescue boat later sent to fetch the BSF men was taken by three personnel but Yadav got drifted in the strong current as the rope holding him snapped and he subsequently landed 400 metres away in the Sialkot sector of Pakistan where he was picked up the Rangers, they said."

Such accidents happen.

I know plenty about the terrain, just not the whole thing about the whole thing about the boating incident. I'll edit my post.
