Pakistani Scientist Declared the World’s Best Scientist in 2012

A Pakistan-based scientist has been honoured by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), the body said in a statement released this week.

Dr Yusuf Zafar, who is the director general agriculture and biotechnology at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission was declared ‘Scientist of the Year-2012’ for his pioneering work in the cotton biotechnology sector.

Zafar has over 110 scientific papers (published in national and international journals) to his name. According to ICAC, “in cotton virology his group covers nearly 90 per cent of the global published literature.”

The Faisalabad-based scientist played a key role in bringing together the world’s major cotton groups, including Australia, China, UK and USA, for the purpose of conducting joint research.

Heading the National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in Faisalabad, Zafar and his team have contributed helped produce nearly 100 M. Phil and 30 Ph. D Pakistan-based students, focussing on various aspects of research and development in cotton. He has, meanwhile, remained in the front line to establish Biosafety Protocols, Plant Breeder Rights, Intellectual Property Rights/Patents and ISO certification in Pakistan.

In 2001, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission awarded him Best Scientist of the Year Award. The President of Pakistan awarded him ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Distinction) in 2004, the highest recognition for a researcher.

In other honours, Zafar has also won the Rockefeller Foundation and UNESCO Research Awards on Agri-Biotechnology, and is member of the USDA Cochran Fellow on Agriculture Biotechnology.

Apart from leading the Faisalabad institute, he is on the Board of Governors of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology-ICGEB (Italy), FAO country focal person on agriculture biotechnology and member of the Cotton Policy Committee of the government.

The ‘Scientist of the year -2012’ award was announced by ICAC late Wednesday. ICAC is an intergovernmental body with 54 members and provides services to Common Funds for Commodity (CFC), an organisation of UNCTAD-UN family.

Applications for the award are invited each year by the Washington DC-based institute and the selection committee comprises five anonymous judges outside the ICAC Secretariat.

Pakistani Student Moosa Firoz Wins World Mathematics Competition 2012

Islamabad March 26:A Beaconhouse student, Moosa Feroze, has bagged the first position in the International World Maths Day Competition, winning the top spot for Pakistan and his school in an international examination. Students from over 200 countries competed in the examination, says a press release.

This year, 5.5 million students of 52,805 schools from around the world participated in the World Math Day, and Moosa Feroze was ranked at Number 1 in the 11 to 13-year-old age group. The results can be viewed at World Maths Day - [url]www.worldmathsday.com - World Education Games[/url]

Moosa Feroze has been specially invited to Australia, along with his parents and the head of his school, to participate in the prize distribution ceremony scheduled to take place in Sydney, Australia.

This year, Moosa Feroze entered the category of 11-13 year olds and has claimed the first position by answering 4,405 questions correctly. In last year’s competition, Moosa had claimed the 5th position internationally and had won a gold medal and certificate. In 2010 Moosa Feroze had secured the 2nd position in the Pakistan in the National Math Challenge. He is a student of Beaconhouse Mandi Bahauddin.

Moosa, his proud father Dr. Khaleeque Dad Tarrar and Beaconhouse Mandi Bahauddin Branch Headmistress Saima Bhatti will be attending the ceremony on special invitation from the Mathletics team at the World Education Games.

Beaconhouse Regional Office representative Saman Imtiaz said, “We are tremendously proud of Moosa’s brilliant achievement. It is incredibly inspiring to see Beaconhouse students perform and achieve acclaim in the international academic arena. Congratulations to Moosa’s parents, his teachers and his Beaconhouse school at Mandi Bahauddin for this accomplishment. Moosa has brought honour to Pakistan, he was competing with students from over 200 countries! Pakistan Students Outshine US Youth in Space Art Contest

Colorado: Capturing many of award slots, Brilliant Pakistani students outshine their counterparts from United States and Turkey in Space Foundation Student Art Contest.

The Space Foundation invited students from around the world in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade to submit original artwork depicting the theme, “Space is Infinite.

More than 1,500 contestants from U.S. states, Turkey and Pakistan were participating in the art contest.

The foundation lauds performance of Pakistani students saying, “School children in Pakistan embraced the contest with particular enthusiasm, capturing many of the award slots. We are genuinely impressed with how students have artistically interpreted our theme of Space is Infinite.

Arfa Karim Randhawa – Youngest Microsoft Certified Professional of the World

Arfa Karim was born on February 2, 1995 in Ram Diwali village located near Faisalabad in Pakistan. She rose to fame at the early age of nine years when in 2004 she became the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional of the world. A record she held till 2008. She was invited by Bill Gates of Microsoft to visit USA and meet him. She went to the USA and met Bill Gates at Microsoft headquarters.

After returning from her visit she became a celebrity and appeared in a number of television shows. She gave a number of interviews. She was also honored by the Government of Pakistan for her achievement. On August 2, 2005 she was awarded the Fatima Jinnah gold medal in the field of science and technology by the then prime minister of Pakistan. Again in August 2005 she received the Salaam Pakistan Youth Award by the then President of Pakistan. She also received the prestigious President’s Award for the Pride of Performance a civil award conferred upon people who have shown excellence in their field of expertise. Till to date she is the youngest recipient of the award. She was also the brand ambassador of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited’s broad band service named EVO. She not only gained fame nationally but also internationally and represented Pakistan in a few forums that were held outside Pakistan.

Arfa was the student of Lahore Grammar School and was studying in A levels. On December 22, 2011 she suffered cardiac arrest after an epileptic seizure and was shifted to Combined Military Hospital in emergency. Her condition deteriorated and she went into a comma. Upon hearing about her condition Bill Gates contacted her parents and offered all possible help he could. He set up a panel of doctors who remained in contact with local doctors and offered whatever help they could. Bill Gates even offered to fly her out of the country for medical treatment but due to her condition the doctors did not permit that.

On January 13, 2012 her condition showed signs of improvement and some activity was noticed in her brain. This raised the possibility of flying her out of the country for treatment. However, unfortunately on January 13, 2012 Arfa Karim died on around 9:50 PM local time. She was laid to rest in her ancestral village on January 15, 2012.

In recognition of her services the Government of Punjab and Sindh announced to name the IT technology parks being developed in the provinces after Arfa Karim. She was an intelligent student and a very nice person may Allah bless her soul and give patience to her family to bear the unexpected and sudden loss.

Ali Moeen Nawazish Sets A-Levels World Record

Ali Moeen Nawazish – An 18-year old wiz-kid from Rawalpindi wanted to get into Cambridge, so he sat in seven A-Levels exams in just one year – and secured 22 A-grades, one B grade and a C!

The Urdu, English and Punjabi speaking wiz-kid is due to win another place – in the Guinness Book of Records. His Cambridge dream came true four months ago when he embarked on a computer science degree course at Trinity Hall. Ali also achieved a top score in the U.S. admissions test and was accepted by most Ivy League institutions, including Harvard and Yale.

When he filled out his university application forms at home in Rawalpindi there was barely enough space to list his qualifications. Ali finished all the exams within 12 months at Rawalpindi’s Roots College International. His entry was organized through accredited boards Ed-Excel and Cambridge International Examinations.

Apart from core science subjects he is almost entirely self taught. He studied for up to 12 hours a day, using energy drinks to help concentrate. He said: ‘Then one day it all clicked. I needed to prove to myself, and to others, that I could do it.’
