Pakistan offers to step up intelligence cooperation with India

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday offered to enhance cooperation with India in the field of intelligence to avert attacks like the Pune blast that could "further the agenda of terrorists" who were holding the bilateral ties "hostage".

Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with visiting US Senator John Kerry, the chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He also expressed Pakistan's "strong commitment to resolve all core issues between the two countries through peaceful means and composite dialogue."

"The Prime Minister condoled the loss of lives in the recent terrorist incident in Pune and expressed his government's readiness to enhance cooperation in intelligence fields with India to ward the possibility of any such untoward incident which could only further the agenda of terrorists," said a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office.

The February 13 blast in a Pune bakery, the first major terror strike in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, had left 10 people dead and 57 injured.

"Pakistan had made progress in bringing the perpetrators of the Mumbai incident to justice and was determined not to allow use of its soil for any terrorist activity against any of its neighbours," Gilani said.

He said Pakistan stood by the joint declaration issued after his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Sherm el-Sheikh in July last year.

Pakistan has "all along been calling for the resumption of dialogue but unfortunately it was the Indian side which had not found it feasible," the statement quoted Gilani as saying.

Gilani said the Indian government "should realise that continuing (to be) impassive in negotiations between the two countries would only benefit the militants and terrorists who were holding the bilateral relations between the two countries hostage."

Kerry and Gilani held wide-ranging discussions on various issues, including the war on terror and the new US policy for Afghanistan.

Kerry, who was in New Delhi on Monday, welcomed the upcoming foreign secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan and said there is "tremendous potential for utilising this opportunity for the good of the people of the two countries."

He expressed the US government's willingness for facilitating the resumption of the Indo-Pak dialogue process in which "all the core issues, including Kashmir and water dispute, can be discussed and resolved by both sides peacefully," according to the statement.

Intelligence cooperation!!....Did he mean to say ISI working hand-in-hand with RAW...!! :what:

What about the lack of tust between these nations particularly between security establishment. I am all for enhanced cooperation between these countries but military or intelligence cooperation seems a far fetched theory. IMO, they should increase inter-government partnership and then move towards this area.

All eyes on proposed talks.

Al-Qaeda's Pakistan arm warns sportsmen against visiting India

Global terror network Al-Qaeda's Pakistan arm has warned of attacks in India, particularly targeting upcoming international sports events like the Commonwealth Games, the Hockey World Cup and the IPL cricket league, a media report said.

Asia Times Online said it had received a message from Illyas Kashmiri, who heads the 313 Brigade, an operational arm of the Al-Qaeda in Pakistan. It also has links with the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed -- the two known terror outfits fighting in Jammu and Kashmir.

The message received on Monday, two days after the Pune bombing which killed 10 people, warns international players against participating in the mega sports events in India.

“We warn the international community not to send their people to the 2010 Hockey World Cup, IPL and Commonwealth Games (to be held in Delhi in October). If they do, they will be responsible for the consequences,” Asia Times said, translating the message originally received in Urdu.

Kashmiri, a Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami commander in Pakistan having close ties with the Al-Qaeda, is believed to have played a role in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Indian investigators believe that David Headley and Tahhawur Hussain Rana, the suspected Lashkar operatives who are in US custody, were reporting to the 313 Brigade. Headley and Rana are alleged to have helped the Lashkar-e-Taiba in plotting possible terror attacks in India.

References to the 313 Brigade were made in the intercepted conversations between 26/11 terrorists and their Pakistani handlers.

In its new email, the terror group has warned that “the mujahideen of 313 Brigade vow to continue attacks all across India until the Indian Army leaves Kashmir and gives the Kashmiris their right of self-determination”.

It also makes a reference to the 1992 demolition of Babri Masjid and 2002 Gujarat riots.

“We assure the Muslims of the subcontinent that we will never forget the massacre of the Muslims in Gujarat and the demolition of Babri Masjid. We warn the Indian government to compensate for all its injustices, otherwise they will see our next action.”
