Pakistan now a donor country, says Musharraf
CHOTI ZAIRIN (May 28 2007): President General Pervez Musharraf has said that the present government has changed the country's status from an aid-recipient to a donor nation. He stated this while addressing notables of the area, at a luncheon hosted by former President Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari at his residence on Sunday.
The President said that the government would continue its policies to further develop the country. The country's defence has been made impregnable and the economy has been strengthened, he added.
President Musharraf recalled that when he took office in 1999 Pakistan was being run on borrowings and he too begged for the country, which was a painful experience. He said even motherland's defence was not strong enough due to the weak economy. But after attaining prosperity, Pakistan has donated rice and wheat to three Muslim countries and it has written off 20 million dollars loan to Bosnia.
Amidst loud clapping, he said, it was the duty of every government to work for the welfare of the people and the incumbent government was doing its utmost efforts to reduce poverty, unemployment and price hike.
President Musharraf said provision of basic necessities of life such as health care, education, clean drinking water, electricity and Sui gas is the duty of the government and it is taking all possible steps to serve the people.
He said 2007 is the election year and elections can only be won with unity. Musharraf said, "We are one family with the same lofty aim of developing our country and attaining prosperity for our people."
He said there is no scarcity of funds and the development projects must be proposed. It is the duty of the government to fulfil the peoples' basic needs, he added.
He lauded the role of Sardar Farooq Leghari, saying he is an enlightened chieftain and is working hard to educate his people by setting up good educational institutions here.
Earlier, President Pervez Musharraf held a meeting with tribal chieftains of various tribes of Punjab and Balochistan and asked them to forge unity among themselves and elect enlightened and moderate candidates during the next elections, so that the development process could continue uninterrupted. He said the present assemblies will complete their tenure and elections will be held as per schedule.
Appreciating the performance of the incumbent government, he said, due to prudent policies being pursued by the PML government the basic necessities are being provided to the common man at their doorsteps.
PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Governor Punjab Lieutenant General (r) Khalid Maqbool, Chief Minister Sindh Ghulam Arbab Rahim, Federal Ministers Yar Muhammad Rind, Awais Ahmed Leghari, senators, MNAs and MPAs also attended the luncheon.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari gifted a horse of an elite race to the President on the occasion.
