Pak vs NZ: PCB to seek NCOC nod to allow limited crowds to stadiums

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to allow limited audiences in the stadiums during the much-awaited New Zealand series amid the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has started preparations to approach the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) to get its nod, Geo News reported Saturday.

Sources privy to the development said that PCB is working on a proposal and will present its case to the apex COVID-19 body later this month.

The board will formally ask the NCOC to allow only vaccinated people at the Rawalpindi and Lahore cricket stadiums.

The PCB is expected to propose permission to fill 50% of the capacity of stadiums to those with COVID-19 vaccination certificates.

It is pertinent to mention here that the NCOC has reimposed restrictions amid the fourth COVID-19 wave in the country which has gripped the country, with an over 8% positivity ratio during the last few days.

Earlier, the Pakistan Super League had to be suspended in March when several players and support staff members tested positive. The tournament was later rescheduled in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan cricket selectors have named a 20-player squad for the three ICC Cricket World Cup Super League One-Day Internationals against New Zealand, which will be played in Rawalpindi on 17, 19 and 21 September.
Uncapped wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris, fast bowlers Mohammad Wasim and Shahnawaz Dahani, and wrist-spinner Zahid Mahmood have been named in the squad, while middle-order batters Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah have been recalled.

Iftikhar’s seventh and last ODI was against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi, while Khushdil’s only ODI appearance was also in the tied match against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim: “The series against New Zealand is extremely important for Pakistan as the matches are part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification. While we have tried to put together a formidable and a balanced unit, we have continued to ensure that we give opportunities to high performing players while looking into the future so that we can develop a strong bench-strength.

“Shahnawaz Dahani was unfortunate to miss the selection for the England matches as the squad was announced before the start of the remaining 20 HBL PSL 6 matches. Hence, he was a straightforward selection when we sat to discuss and finalise the side for the New Zealand series. We have also given continued run to Mohammad Wasim, who impressed everyone in the T20Is against the West Indies.

“Zahid Mahmood has been added to support Usman Qadir. While picking him, we took into consideration that he had excelled last time he played in a white-ball match in Lahore against South Africa. Although this time the format will be different, but in domestic 50-over competitions he has shown through his performances that he has the temperament to also perform in ODIs.

“Mohammad Rizwan remains the first-choice wicketkeeper, as such, it has been decided to include 20-year-old Mohammad Haris in place of Sarfaraz Ahmed. This is not only to reward Haris for his outstanding domestic performances in the previous season, but also to give him a taste and flair of international cricket along with its rigours and demands and to ensure that we continue to groom young wicketkeepers who are fit and ready to step up when the opportunity presents itself.

“Middle-order has remained our concern and, as such, after trying a few options, we have decided to give another run to Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah, The two batters have played sufficient 50-over cricket at the domestic level and boast the required firepower to utilise the slog overs. We are optimistic they will come good in home conditions.

“I know a few players will feel disappointed at missing out on the selection but we have a busy season of cricket ahead, which means there will be ample opportunities down the line for everyone to put up strong performances and push their case for national selection.”

New Zealand cricket team arrives in Pakistan after 18 years

The New Zealand cricket team arrived in Pakistan on Saturday for the first time in 18 years to play three One-day Internationals and five Twenty20 Internationals.

The Kiwis landed at the Islamabad airport and headed to a hotel where they will undergo a mandatory isolation for three days before commencing a two-day practice session on Sept 15, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The ODI series against New Zealand will be played at the Rawalpindi Stadium, with matches scheduled for Sept 17, 19, and 21, while the Gaddafi Stadium will host five T20s scheduled to take place from Sept 25 to Oct 3.

Meanwhile, the PCB and the New Zealand Cricket have mutually agreed to change the status of the ODI series to a bilateral series from the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League fixtures due to the non-availability of the Decision Review System (DRS) — a requirement in the event playing conditions, a PCB press release said.
As New Zealand will return to Pakistan in the 2022-23 season to play two Tests and three ODIs, the two boards have agreed that these 50-over matches will now count towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification.

A number of former cricketers and players of current men's and women's teams expressed their contentment on the arrival of the Kiwis on a "historic tour", PCB said in a statement.

"It is a great news for passionate cricket fans that New Zealand is arriving in Pakistan after a long gap. I still remember a match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi when Shoaib Akhtar bowled really fast and took six wickets," recalled Rashid Latif, former wicket-keeper of the Pakistan team.

Women’s team all-rounder Nida Dar is hopeful of an "excited series" between the two sides.

“I am looking forward to what promises to be exciting series. My well-wishes are with the men in green and I am sure they will do well," she said.

Former Test cricketer and now national U19 coach Ijaz Ahmed said the tour of New Zealand was another step forward towards the complete resumption of the international cricket in Pakistan. "After New Zealand, England are due to visit next month here, which is fantastic for the cricket fans," he said.

New Zealand are the first side to visit Pakistan in what will be an action-packed 2021-22 season for the local cricket fans. Following the tour by Black Caps, England’s men and women sides will play T20 Internationals fixtures in Karachi before West Indies are expected to arrive in the port city in December for three ODIs and three T20 Internationals.

Australia are then scheduled to undertake a full tour in February/March 2022 in what would be their first trip to Pakistan since 1998.

A bomb blast outside the New Zealand team’s hotel in Karachi in 2002 had cut short the Black Caps’ last Test tour of Pakistan, but they visited again for an ODI series the following year.


Since the 2003 ODI series, Pakistan have thrice hosted New Zealand for ODIs in the United Arab Emirates with the Black Caps winning the 2019-10 and 2014-15 series and drawing the 2018-19 rubber.

However, Pakistan won the 2009-10 and 2018-19 T20I series while the 2014-15 series was shared.

New Zealand's cricket team arrived in Islamabad on Saturday for its first tour to Pakistan in 18 years. Here is all you need to know about the upcoming series.


The Kiwis are set to play three ODIs and five T20Is during the three-week-long tour with the first ODI scheduled for September 17 and the final T20 on October 3. The ODI series will be played in Rawalpindi while all five T20Is will be hosted at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Ticket details

With the vaccination drive at its peak, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), after approval from the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), had allowed 25 per cent crowd attendance for the series.

The tickets went on sale Saturday afternoon.

The tickets for the ODI series are available for Rs1,000 and Rs2,000, while the ticket prices for T20Is range between Rs500 and Rs3,000.

Tickets can be booked online from Bookme's website and mobile applications. They are also available at all M&P courier offices across the country.


Terms & conditions for spectators

According to the PCB, only vaccinated individuals will be allowed to purchase tickets. NADRA-issued vaccination certificates will be required at the time of purchase and when gaining access to the stadium.
Ticket holders must carry their original CNIC to gain entry to the stadium.

Spectators between the ages of 17 and 18 should be partially vaccinated to access the stadium (must carry proof of partial vaccination).

All participants must wear masks and strictly adhere to the bio-secure protocols. Any violation will be liable to be evicted out of the venue.


Preview

New Zealand last toured Pakistan in 2003 for a five-match ODI series, which Pakistan won 3-2. Since then, Pakistan have hosted Black Caps thrice in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Black Caps won the 2009-10 and 2014-15 series 2-1 and 3-2, respectively. The ODI series in the 2018-19 series was a 1-1 draw, while Pakistan won the T20 series 3-0 during the tour.

Historically, Pakistan have enjoyed an upper hand against New Zealand in ODIs. Out of 107 games played between the two sides, Pakistan have won 55, and New Zealand 48. One of the bilateral games was a tie while three ended in no-result.

Pakistan have also edged ahead in the shortest format of the game. Of the 24 T20Is played between the two countries since 2007, Pakistan have won 14 and lost 10.

While the upcoming ODI series is a bilateral affair, the T20 series will certainly help both sides with preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which is starting mid-October in the UAE.
