I don't see why F22P couldn't carry VLS. What you want may not be a frigate.

I have visited F-22P and to install VLS in that ship many modifications in structure will be needed, VLS may be little easier to install in place of FM-90 but still it will require some structural modifications.

Replacing the FM-90 is one route, which depends on what is in the areas beneath that launcher. Another, not too complex route would be to lengthen the hull at that point by a hull plug designed to take the VLS (i.e. slice - insert - splice)

EDIT: the hull plug would be designed for a new, slightly larger ship, I am not suggesting to modify the existing ships that way. While possible (it is done with submarines, e.g), that would probably be too expensive at this time.

The insatallation of a single Mk41 selfdefence modulee on Australian and Turkish Perry's is illustrative. See also Mk48/56 installations used on Danish StanFlex ships. In essence you don't need more than a single deck worth of depth and a portion of the VLS protrude above deck. Or 2 decks if you want a flushdeck mount. Which is double to what a 76mm cannon like the AK176 or the Oto needs.

The MK 41 VLS is itself available in 3 different sizes, to meet differing hull and mission requirements:
  • The 7.7m Strike length MK 41 is the largest system accommodating the widest variety of missiles, up to and including Tomahawk cruise missiles for land attack, and SM-3s for ballistic missile defense. Its capabilities cover almost every mission in naval warfare: anti-air, anti-submarine, ship self-defense, land attack, and ballistic missile defense. In future, it also has the potential to carry anti-ship missiles, like the LRASM/OASuW. A land-based version will make up part of the USA’s “Aegis Ashore” missile defense complexes in Romania and Poland.

    The 6.8m Tactical length Mk 41 is over 7 feet shorter than the Strike length, and can accommodate a variety of missiles up to approximately 18.5 feet in length. SM-2 Standard and RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow air defense missiles, and VL-ASROC anti-submarine missiles, will fit in a tactical length cell.

  • The 5.3m Self-Defense Launcher (SDL) is specifically designed to carry self-defense missiles for small ships, and is shorter and lighter than the other variants. Its size and weight are designed to accommodate smaller ships like corvettes and frigates, as well as aircraft carriers with limited deck and hull space.
The height (missile length) of the launcher comes in three sizes: 209 inches (5.3 m) for the self-defense version, 266 inches (6.8 m) for the tactical version, and 303 inches (7.7 m) for the strike version. The empty weight for an 8-cell module is 26,800 pounds for the self-defense version, 29,800 pounds for the tactical version, and 32,000 pounds for the strike version

  • The launcher on the Aussie and Turk Perry's is the TACTICAL, not the shortest SDL. The SDL is 1.5m shorter than the Tactical launcher.
This is a Mk48/56 module for ESSM (3.66m): its takes a single deck belowdecks. Total height about 5m. A pair of those gives you 24 ESSM.

Based on the above, a minimal Shtil VL installation would be 1x 12 cell VLU (across), 2 radar illuminators or 1 radar illuminator and a TV/optical director. The missile is just over 5m, to the VLU will be taller. Much like Mk41 SDL or Sylver A-50. China's HQ16 will be similar in size.

good post. Minus the best in the world part. The Navy is suited for what it needs to do, coastal defense, anti piracy and anti ship warfare.

China Shipbuilding Trading Corporation (CSTC) secured an order from the Pakistan navy for four warships. These are thought to be improved variants of the F-22P Zulfiquar class frigates, four of which have already been built for the navy, (three in China and one in Karachi).

According to a spokesman for Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works, the Pakistan navy recommended a large number of modifications for the follow on batch of frigates, and these modifications have been accepted by the Chinese designers.

A spokesman for CSTC was unable to say if the eight FM-90 SAMs (Crotale copy) would be replaced by a larger number of more capable missiles housed in a VLS however. The SAM armament of the current F-22P class frigates is a noted shortcoming of the design.
