Pakistan must offer apology to Bangladesh: Dawn

daily sun | First Page | Pakistan must offer apology to Bangladesh: Dawn

ISLAMABAD: It is a welcome sign that, despite the deep grudge many in Bangladesh still bear against the West Pakistani military action of 1971, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly accepted Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar’s invitation to attend the D-8 summit in Islamabad this month, prestigious Pakistan paper the Dawn said in an editorial on Sunday.

Dhaka would like a proper apology from the Pakistani government for the large-scale killing of Bengalis. It was not satisfied with then president Gen (retd) Musharraf’s expression of “regret” in 2002.

According to the Bangladesh foreign secretary, “some unresolved issues” still exist although, he says, Ms Khar stated that Pakistan had “regretted in different forms and … it was time to move on”.

The debate by academicians and propagandists on both sides will continue; they will fight over the actual number — in thousands for some, millions for others — of Bengalis killed while resisting the injustices perpetrated on them by an insensitive western wing.

What cannot be denied is that brute military force was used to exterminate activists, intellectuals and ordinary supporters of what was united Pakistan’s largest political party, and that consequently led to Indian action and the creation of Bangladesh.

On its part Pakistan must recognise the wrongs committed by its leadership during those days, and issue a full-fledged apology — not just expressions of regret — that is acceptable to Dhaka.

In doing so, it would be joining the ranks of other countries and institutions that have been courageous enough to admit the historical wrongs they have committed in order to give both themselves and the victim nation a chance to move on.

The Vatican has apologised for the actions of Catholics who persecuted non-Catholics, and expressed sorrow over the attack on Constantinople during the Crusades. Japan has apologised to Koreans for wartime aggression. It is time for Pakistan, too, to come to terms with its past.

This article has been posted here ... and thanks to the Pakistanis who commented in support for that in the article...

I am also thankful to Imran Khan as he is the only politicians who also asked the same publicly.

Pakistan should also offer an apology to India for the years of terrorism and drop all claims to Kashmir. And vacate Azad Kashmir and hand it over to India, so that peace may prevail in the sub continent :D

Dawn Editorial Issue full-fledged apology to BD

DHAKA: The leading Pakistani English daily ‘Dawn’ Sunday published its editorial regarding the long-standing issue – ‘Pakistan’s apology to Bangladesh for 1971 war crimes’.

The editorial is as follows:

It is a welcome sign that, despite the deep grudge many in Bangladesh still bear against the West Pakistani military action of 1971, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has accepted Pak Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar’s invitation to attend the D-8 summit in Islamabad this month.

In other threads Pakistanis have claimed an apology is not needed because, president musharref pervez had already said sorry for the 1971 events. Reality is apology and sorry are two different words. An apology includes sorry, but a sorry does not include apology. President Musharref cetainly paved the way for a future apology by uttering sorry by himself. It was a good step, but has not been followed up by the next Pakistani politicians.

That's derailing the subject which is: a rapprochement between BD and Pakistan. That is something Indians dread, and therefore Paid Posters must jump in to sabotage any such discussion.

What has happened, has happened...

Why they ask "sorry bol" like a kindergarden kid.

Leave the past and move on....

Yes , war crimes were horrific and shouldnt have happened. A sorry wont bring back dead from graves . I believe Mushy has already conveyed the "regrets". Expecting an official apology at this age is unlikely.

In other thread you mentioned that Pakistan never shared the foreign exchange after the creation of Bangladesh but made Bangladesh to share the debt, how much foreign exchange Bangladesh ought to get and how much debt Bangladesh shared.

President Musharraf regretted but did not said sorry directly for the atrocities and genocidal crime carried out in 1971. That is his personal opinion not the state recognition. Before accepting what Musharraf said does Pakistan officially recognize the statement?? Still their mind set is that nothing wrong was happened, some traitor wanted to break the country with Indian help and Pakistani army responded which does not go through the detail of the atrocities, discrimination and genocide which eventually took the whole situation to the level of separation.

Because that was a genocide. If that is the case that you have mentioned then why Israel use Holocaust, holocaust every now and then when Germany already offered an apology and provided more then 100 billion usd of cash support??? A genocide can not be forgotten if it is large in number. Period.

I hate the word "sorry "

ISLAMABAD: Ex-Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan has demanded an official apology from the Government of Pakistan to the people of Bangladesh for the atrocities allegedly committed by the Pakistan Army in 1971.

Imran Khan stunned everyone during a live television show hosted by Hamid Mir on Geo News and Geo Super TV channels on Wednesday afternoon just a few moments before the start of a cricket match between Pakistan and West Indies in Mirpur, Bangladesh.

Hamid Mir invited Imran Khan in his live TV show on March 23, which was Pakistan Day. He asked a question to Imran Khan about the expected behaviour of Bangladeshi crowd in Mirpur. Imran Khan said that Bangladeshis will support the Pakistani cricket team.

Hamid Mir informed Imran Khan that today (March 23) is Pakistan Day and Bangladeshis will support Pakistani cricket team “Don’t you think that the time has come that the Pakistani government must apologise to the people of Bangladesh for Army operation in 1971”? Imran Khan immediately agreed with Hamid Mir and said that previously he was also of the opinion that Army operation was a good thing because there was no independent media in Pakistan in 1971. Imran Khan said that when he went to England in 1971, his Bengali friends told him the reality of the Army operation. Imran Khan said that he experienced the love and affection of Bangladeshis during an exhibition match in Mirpur in 1989.

He said that the Army operations always created hatred in Pakistan and we must apologise to Bangladeshis. Responding another question, Imran Khan said “we must learn lessons from our past mistakes and we should not repeat these mistakes in Balochistan and tribal areas where we have started Army operations on the US pressure”. Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan is the first ever Pakistani dignitary who has demanded an apology from Pakistan to Bangladesh on a live TV show in Pakistan.

Sorry for not finishing you off like we should have enemies in 1971.
