What's new

Pakistan may study other fighter options as US asks Pakistan to make full payment for F-16 purchase

I think it's the time Pakistan should move from F-16 and get J-10 C which gives almost equal capable to F-16's

With $700 Million Pakistan can get 25 of J-10 :D :D

Nope,

A unit cost for F-16 Blk 52 is $ 34 Million. Pakistan was paying $ 700 million for 8 aircrafts .. that is 87.5$ per plane.

So what is extra $53.5 million for ? These are for spares , engines etc.

Now J-10C cost $30 Million per unit. But J-10 is a new aircraft where as F-16 is a fully integrated aircraft that has been service for 35 years in, No pilot or crew training required, no bases with overhauling equipment required.

A similar deal for J 10, will at least cost twice as much as F-16 to integrate in PAF.

So Indian diplomacy worked to some extent :D

The US will no longer subsidise the sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, a senior state department official has told the BBC.

The decision means that Pakistan will have to pay more than $700m (£480m) - two-and-a-half times the original cost - if it wishes to buy the aircraft.

It comes after Congress refused to approve funding for the deal.

Some US lawmakers had accused Pakistan of not doing enough to fight militants. India also objected to the sale.

However, Pakistan has argued that the jets are needed for anti-terror operations, and so the US should help with funding the purchase
People close to the deal say it is highly unlikely that Pakistan will be willing to pay the full cost of the fighter jets, so it seems to be off for all practical purposes.

A spokesman for the Pakistan embassy in Washington, Nadeem Hotiana, told the BBC that arms sales were a long process and that he would not comment on the deal's current status.

"F-16s provide precision strike capability to Pakistan's ongoing campaign against militancy," he said.

"Pakistan believes that the threat from terrorist networks requires continued capacity building and both governments continue to work together towards this objective through a range of measures including the sale of these aircraft.
The senior US state department official, who asked to remain anonymous as he was not authorised to speak on the matter, says the Obama administration is still very much in favour of selling the fighter jets to Pakistan as it believes it is in the national interest of the United States.

However, Pakistan would have to bear the full cost of the F-16 fighter jets if it wished to proceed, he said.

The original arrangement had been that Pakistan would pay close to $270m, with the US foreign military financing budget paying for the rest.

However, top US lawmakers have expressed concerns over the US government's decision to sell the jets to Pakistan, saying they could be used against India rather than for combating terrorism.

Speaking on Wednesday, Congressman Matt Salmon said: "India-Pakistan tensions remain elevated, and some question whether the F-16s could ultimately be used against India or other regional powers, rather than the terrorists as Pakistan has asserted."

Heard any thing good for first time for F-16 from across the boarder. :)

This is good news for Pakistan. Even tremendous news. Truly a blessing. We're not going to pay 700 million for outdated tech. Sanity dictates (actually always has dictated) that Pakistan pursue other options or just stick with the newer JF-17 builds. Move away from the American realm of influence.

A big thanks to the US senators/congressmen! You made it possible for the naysayers.

Had it been up to our leaders we would have gone for these sanction prone platforms. Now let's see whether the F-16 supporters are going to justify the earmarking of 700 million dollars for the acquisition of these wretched platforms. After all, a lack of money is always used as an argument to negate the acquisition of other platforms. It should also be a very big issue now.

Huge diplomatic Success????? Come on mate.....

As per rules you are not supposed to doctor the title....... If you think this is a diplomatic success, then it should be part of your post not the title......

That's great news. Even paying some money with US aid contribution was being criticized by defense analysts on Pakistani TV.
Reason being F-16 is an old jet and even with lots of makeup it is old.
If Pakistan has to spend money it will be spent on new technology jets not 80s era F-16s. Thats what I heard one of ex PAF cheif was saying on TV.

If not F-16, Pakistan has choices from China or other countries. Russia, Sweden, France, European consortiums will certainly pitch for their best.

Actually no. Many Pakistanis like me are saying all along if they come under FMF fine otherwise its high time we move past F-16s because of the baggage that it comes with. You are welcome to see our posts in threads related to F-16s.

Nop Pakistan never asked for this lot of F-16s. It was a US proposal.
Pakistan still isn't desperate for it and you don't see much reaction on this from PAF or Government.
