What's new

Pakistan may study other fighter options as US asks Pakistan to make full payment for F-16 purchase

Do you have any news about package offered in this deal?
Heard the rumor that this deal involve some new goodies for already existing F16 fleet.
Let say,
If USA is offering us Advance weaponry & tracking systems for our new and old F16s, then isn't it wise to stick to this deal for a while?
The DSCA notice had 8 F-16s with their necessary engines, avionics, and spare-parts. No other "goodies."

This deal should be cancelled now that the US has said it expects full payment. A proper shift should occur with a proper tilt away from US supplied platforms and munitions.
The JF 17 should be properly funded and a new platform searched to slowly replace the F 16s, It is not boding well that we depend so much on a country which would deprive us of parts at their whim or worse.

Hi,

So when they put the sanctions--you will be deeper down into the sh-it.

You understand how a BAIT is used----.

Sir

Any jet we pursue from United States, Europe or Russia will be prone to sanctions.

It leaves only Chinese option behind. And there is nothing in their market which can actively act as 4+ or 4++ Generation aircraft for PAF.

They lags behind in key areas, from engine to weaponry, from ECM to radar .......

On paper their aircrafts look awesome, but in reality they are not a worthy shot.

Despite F16s, there is no other feasible option.
PAF plans to add 2 more squadrons of F16 & 8 more squadrons of Jf17 by 2020 to replace the legacy fighters........ And F16-Jf17 combo is best and most time efficient.

During the era of Musharraf, PAF showed the requirement of 72 4+ Generation aircrafts along with Jf17 as replacement of old aircrafts. Musharraf divided those 72 in to
36 from East, 36 from West.

For 36 Western aircrafts we went to United States and they offered F16 52+ and F15 C/D. We refused F15s & decided to buy F16s only. Brought 18 of them and LEFT the rest for lack of funds due to economic crisis during Zardari era.

Same thing happened with J10 which after evaluation by PAF fighters were rejected too as they were powered by WS10 which was a thumb down case. Al31 were not available. Above all, it's superiority was questionable.

Now our of those 72 4+ Generation aircrafts we got only 18, & this is very miserable.........
Blame it lack of funds or poor planning, it's up to us.
But the country with so weak foreign policy is bound to trap in trouble of sanctions, something for what PAF must not be blamed.

Yes thats how it will end. Its classic bait & switch, they simply want to sell and make money. When it comes to the crunch they will pull the rug under the feet. Thats why even India is hesitant buying any critical weapon system from US. They wont transfer the technology and will end up become dummy weapons during war. Infact during Kargil war they even refused GPS access which led India to launch its own GPS sats. Infact pakistan buying F16 will be beneficial to India.

Washington: The Obama administration has asked Pakistan to "put forward" its "national funds" to buy the eight F-16 fighter jets as some top American Senators have put a hold on use of the US tax payers' money for this purpose.

"While Congress has approved the sale, key members have made clear that they object to using FMF (foreign military financing) to support it. Given Congressional objections, we have told the Pakistanis that they should put forward national funds for that purpose," US State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters at his daily news conference on Monday.

Kirby, however, did not say when this decision was taken and when was it communicated to Pakistan.

On 11 February, the State Department had informed the Congress about its determination for selling eight the fighter jets to Pakistan at an estimated cost of USD 700 million. The move was opposed by the Indian government as it summoned the US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, to lodge its protest.

Here in the US, top American lawmakers led by Senator Bob Corker, Chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, put a hold on the sale arguing that it would not let the Obama administration use tax payers' money for sale of the fighter jets to Pakistan given that Islamabad was not taking enough action against terrorist organisations, in particular the Haqqani network, and there was continued existence of terrorist safe havens inside its territory.

Several Indian American organisations reached out to lawmakers expressing their concern over such a sale, which they argued is nothing but rewarding a bad actor.

Last week, top American lawmakers during a Congressional hearing openly told the Obama administration that they feared Pakistan would be using these F-16 fighter jets against India and not against terrorists.

However, both the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and the Pakistan government insisted that F-16 is an important tool in the fight against terrorism and urged the Congress to remove the hold. The lawmakers stood their ground and told the Obama administration that it will not till the time Pakistan takes tangible action against the Haqqani network.

On the occasion of fifth anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, the al Qaeda leader at a safe hideout in Abbottabad on the outskirts of a Pakistan Army garrison town, by American commandos, the US publicly announced that it has asked Pakistan to use its national resources to buy F-16.

In saying so, the US expressed its disappointment over the Congressional hold. "Effective engagement with Pakistan, we believe, is critical to promoting the consolidation of democratic institutions and economic stability in supporting the government's counterterrorism activities and capabilities," Kirby said.

"As a matter of long-standing principle, the Department of State opposes conditions to the release of appropriated
foreign assistance funds. We believe that such conditions limit the president and the secretary's ability to conduct foreign policy in the best interest of the United States," Kirby said.

Any military sale the Americans provide has a end user attached to it thus they monitor how it is used, why you think India does not buy fighter planes from USA? Buying transport planes like C130 is okay but Rafale is exempt from USA unlike Eurofighter or Gripen.

This was one of the logical reasons India went for the Rafale it is totally free from USA which is not the case for EF.

American still can't digest the fact that OBL was found in your garrison town and they strongly feel that betrayal till now. Only time will heal. Pakistan has to toe the line with respect to war on terror and not differentiate between good or bad terrorist.

Not just that but failure to take action on groups like LET, remember Clintons words?

Keeping snakes in the backyard? And this woman is running for office

You just had the worse terror attack since 9/11 in USA with links to Pakistani lady who attended a madrassa in Pakistan. You think the joe public in USA are happy about tax payers money going abroad?

Part of the kerry lugar bill was that Pakistan would take action on groups which attack Afghanistan and India but releasing Lakhvi and the airbase attack shows they have no desire in doing so.

Yes - plus a general shift to an independent foreign policy too. The U.S. can feel betrayed about violently entering into a distant region and picking fights with the locals to its heart's content.

Pakistan should pay and be care in future, PAF should reduce its love with F16. She is an expensive sweet heart.
