Pakistan has world's weakest higher education system, say QS rankings

Pakistan has the world’s weakest higher education system while US and UK have the strongest.

Pakistan has been ranked 50, with an overall score of 9.2 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British ranking agency. Despite the government’s claims to have invested billions in the country’s education system, Pakistan secured the lowest ranking of the fifty countries included in the list.

Six Pakistani institutes among world’s top 800 universities

The United States received the top spot on the table with an overall score off 100 points, followed by the United Kingdom (98.5 points). While, India was ranked 24 with 60.9 points.

The QS higher education system strength rankings is divided into four categories: system strength, access, flagship institution and economic context.

Countries with the best higher education systems:

United States – 100

United Kingdom – 98.5

Germany – 94

Australia – 92.6

Canada – 90.2

France – 89

Netherlands – 84.8

China – 83.5

South Korea – 80.1

Japan – 78.5

System Strength

The category assesses ‘overall national system strength’, based on how many of the country’s universities are featured in international rankings.

“Each country is awarded a score based on the number of its institutions which are ranked 700 or above in the QS World University Rankings®, divided by the average position of those institutions. The aim is to give an overall indication of each country’s standing in the global ranking tables,” the website stated.

Flagship instituition

The ‘flagship’ category assesses the performance of the country’s leading institution within global rankings.

“This is a normalised score, based on the place each nation’s top university occupies in the QS World University Rankings.”

Economic context

The economic context takes into account the impact of “national investment in higher education, by comparing each nation’s financial situation to its performance in the international rankings.”

Taking all four categories into consideration, Pakistan has been ranked at the bottom of the table as compared to Canada 5, France 6, China 8, Saudi Arabia 36 and Turkey 39 among several other countries.

These are for countries who had Universities ranked in top 800 . PK had 5-6 universities in top 700 . That means its better than most nations who didn't even have a single university ranked in the rankings .

Pakistan should ask China to start few universities in Pakistan itself or still better if China agrees to impart education to 10,000 Pakistani youths annually in best of their universities. That's what friends are expected to do.

.
congratulations pakistan. once again we came up to the expectations. corruption has devoured everything in this country and the materialism and the greed of the gen population and leadership is increasing day by day. things will get even worse.

Oh for heavens sakes. Its a ranking made by a private body based upon rankings made by another private body. Whats the criteria? How and why is that defined.

So please @litman et al, just read the damn thing before making such posts based upon the headline.

tell me are you really satisfied with the higher education system in pakistan? are you satisfied with the quality of the edcuation being imparted to the students? are you satisfied with the current system of making education a "business" and looting people? are you satisfied with the research being done in our institutes and research methodology being taught in our educational institutes? are you satisfied with the level of cheating during the exams in sindh and all over the country? the videos that surfaced on the media of the exams being held in sindh were hilarious.

the problems isnt just with the universities. Students themselves no longer have the passion of receiving knowledge. They're just here for the piece of paper called a degree.

My two cents,

Close all the Madarsas, religion based education should be given in universities as second or third language with due importance.
Then invite scholars from your friendly countries like Turkey and China, not to teach religion but to teach science and economics.
Look at the two countries that i gave example of, Turkey is a very prosperous nation and so is China. You should learn from them.

India also need to improve a lot, but we are on right track to catch up the top five in few years.

Any improvements suggestion are welcome

I have seen some brilliant guys coming out of NUST. They need to imitate that system throughout.

Indeed, NUST is the hub of engineering talent in Pakistan. But even some of its campuses too don't meet up the requirements of a modern research university, Particularly the military colleges. (Me being a NUSTian at a military college) .Whereas the colleges at the NUST main campus actually surpass the requirements. NUST itself first needs to imitate that system in all of its campuses.

Nope, you see the problem here isnt the Madrassahs. The problems is the quality of education and the isolation of the particular type of education in Madrassahs. Madrassahs are centers of educations and must impart Islamic, Scientific and Social knowledge. what is most unfortunate is the fact that madrassahs have only hinged on to the Islamic knowledge and have kept themselves and their students in dark regarding worldly affairs.

You see in the times of the Caliphs and the golden age of the Muslims in Spain, Madrassahs were places where even politics were discussed.

i am very impressed with the quality of education of Indian Institutes. I even did an online course on Thermodynamics being offered by an IIT on Edx.

.
being the victim of that system i can f*****g vouch for that

I'm a NUSTian Sir, infact i'm in SMME which apparently is the pride of NUST. but we have a long way to go. your statements are not very qualified. What i must add, however, is that our administration at SMME has finally woken up from slumber and is working really hard to improve things here

Oh is that it? Then, You'll be shocked to see the system at MCS, my friend. You're at a much better place. Your expectations'd be much higher than us signalianz.
