Pakistan Has Saved Over $410 Million in Forex Thanks to “Made in Pakistan” Smartphones

Yes what my point was local assembly, and the steps any country has to take to develop their industry base. . All of the brands you listed have localization in India and rarely import finished products. All of this happened in the last 10 years which we lost.

The reason I mentioned India is in the 90's and early 21st century India was not very much different from Pakistan, India went ahead of Pakistan in the last decade. Same as Bangladesh especially in textiles even though Bangladesh has very little cotton production ( correct me if I am wrong) but just because of flawed policies even our textile sector suffered and value addition was insignificant ( moved to the bottom with cotton cloth or yarn as the bulk of exports).

Importing less and less finished products. For example they are well behind China and are ahead of us. ( Even China started with local assembly than moved onto indigenization of local parts and are have now their industry has developed enough sophistication to start rivaling other countries in niche manufacturing and technologies).

Same goes for their other sectors in India e.g. auto sector ( they started with local assembly than moved onto local manufacturing of auto parts and are now auto parts are a big chunk of their overall exports).

Went ahead? You have never been to India I reckon. If you set a foot there you feel like you stepped back in time bro and I am not kidding

I am not an Indian fan infact the exact opposite. :undecided:

I am not pleased to write that but we have a lot of catching up to do. Ignoring where we went wrong does not serve us.

.
Pakistan should phase everything that is popular and change it with a local brand that is how you keep money inside.. Even throw out uber
We should challenge startups to create competitive local brands, and as they succeed give them reward money to catch up. Harnessing the entrepreneurship among out local talent.

I was not being biased on anything.. I have seen it with my own eyes travelled from north to south with a motorcycle drove thru out India

You misunderstood my post bro, we need to catch up in many fields. Pharma, auto, IT, in general industrialization, exports, energy sector etc. Name one sector where we are ahead? They export refined petroleum products, our refineries shut down if we don't buy the Furnace oil ( which our refineries are unable to process further into refined products ' value addition of crude' ) on the other hand we import refined products like petrol diesel let alone high grade plastics, pvc etc. They export more gems and jewelry ( mostly imitation) than our total exports.

Social issues or economic divide was not I was commenting on.

On a macro level Indian economy has outpaced us in the last decade or so. Their economic fundamentals are much stronger and balanced than ours.

Anyways that's not the topic of this thread. We need to introspect ourselves. At basic economic level our population is far more uneducated than theirs take the example of 'SBP reforms and autonomy'.

everything is 20 to 25 years behind in Pakistan.
Transportation is at least 40 to 50 years behind. Just look at our Transportation system, routes, Buses, Bus stations, metroRail, train and train stations.

It’s very possible to development alternatives to UBer in Pakistan but we need competent people running it. You will need top software house and management team.

Give me 50 billons and I can create most advance environmentally friendly city in Pakistan.
Best master plan
Multiple districts within a city
Best urban development plan with Parks, entertainment district, malls, museum district, sports city, IT city, commercial district financial district, uptown, downtown, suburbs.
transportation system: Buses, monorail (downtown), metroRail (within city), bullettrain (city to city).
No car older than year 2000 on the street
Cars registration (every 2 years), inspection and emissions testing.
Infrastructure setup for electric cars.
Security: City police, rapid reaction force/SWAT, robots, street cameras, drone for monitoring traffic and prevent crimes.
Proper system setup for Clean water, Gray water, black water, industrial waste water, proper rain water drainage system, water reservoirs with floating gardens, garbage pickup and processing plants, Turn garbage to energy.
Education: Top schools, college, technical/vocational colleges, universities.

I don't know if this means that 85% of all phones sold locally are assembled in Pakistan. If so - this is an excellent development.

Of course we have to make the distinction between featurephones and smartphones. Featurephones (those that have physical keys) are still a majority of the market in the subcontinent for poorer folks. These phones typically are cheaper than $200, some are as cheap as $50.

Next step (if volume warrants, which is true) is making more expensive cellphone components locally in Pakistan instead of importing them (where possible), starting with expensive imported components like screens. But govt. has to help manufacturers with those screen factory investments (tariff support again)- because they are very capital intensive investments.

To be truly price-competitive in local market, as well as exports, Pakistani cellphone assemblers cannot be dependent for critical inputs like screen on import sources. The price may go up or the vendor may place odd conditions on sourcing if they sense that those conditions will make them some money...one Pakistani OEM screen-maker can serve a good portion of the local cellphone assemblers' needs. This is the case in Bangladesh.

But yes - all in good time. First step of placing higher tariff on CBU phones is excellent move.
Pakistan's car industry started in much the same way, but we never managed to localize the inputs. Still stuck assembling imported kits. It's upon the Pakistani gov't to start mandating more localization (for cars, appliances, phones, etc). Unfortunately, our population doesn't have enough skilled people to make this tenable at the speed we need this to happen, but if our people had just another 10-15 years left in them to struggle, we can turn things around big time.

Don't lose hope brother. Things can still be turned around and Pakistan is not alone in this world. Masha-Allah there are plenty of talented people in all Muslim countries (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey) who can come down to Pakistan and train/assist as technical experts. I certainly know some Bangladeshis who can certainly volunteer in training technical expertise briefly for any industry if asked. But we have to let this Covid thing run its course first.

I was also very excited when first heard about the savings. But than I found that the import cost of the components which go into make a cell phone has gone up substantially. The net grain for the country beside a little foreign exchange save was employment generation

Previus governments weren’t serious about people development in Pakistan. IK has taken some great initiatives but we won’t see the results overnight. It will take 5 to 10 years.
We need 10,000 technical/vocational colleges in Pakistan to turn non skill into skill workers.

I have been to both North and South india.
