Pakistan hands over 35 Indian prisoners

English_Xinhua 2008-08-15 16:37:17

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Friday handed over 34 Indian fishermen and a civilian prisoner to Indian authorities, who had been arrested for allegedly entering Pakistani waters in the Arabian Sea.

The young fishermen aged between 12 to 17 were handed over to the Indian officials at the Wagah border, according to the News Network International (NNI) news agency.

The Interior Ministry of Pakistan says that the fishermen were released as a goodwill gesture on the Independence Day of Pakistan, celebrated on Thursday.

Some freed Indian fishermen said they were treated well in detention at a Karachi prison, said the NNI report.

They were freed from a youth prison facility on Thursday and were brought to Lahore, capital city of the eastern Punjab province in a bus.

Indian diplomats from the embassy and members of the fishermen society were present when the fishermen crossed the border to join families.
