According to Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health, Dr. Zafar Mirza, the PTI-led federal government has finalized the strategy for introducing auto-disabling syringes in all public and private hospitals in the country.

An auto-disabling syringe automatically becomes unusable after one use. These syringes will help to contain the spread of diseases and infections arising from the repeated use of single-use syringes.

By the end of April 2020, single-use syringes will be replaced with auto-disabling syringes in all public and private health facilities, said Dr. Zafar Mirza.

Repeated usage of single-use syringes was the biggest reason behind the recent HIV outbreak witnessed in Larkana, Sindh, where more than 1,000 people were tested positive for HIV. Children were the primary victims of the HIV outbreak as around 800 children contracted the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the HIV outbreak as a Grade 2 Emergency.

Healthcare authorities are investigating the incident of the HIV outbreak in Larkana. To prevent such incidents from happening in the future, the federal government has approved the establishment of an injection safety committee and task force.

For successful implementation of the strategy to introduce auto-disabling syringes, the government has held talks with syringe manufacturers and importers, said Dr. Mirza. Relevant stakeholders have ensured the government of their complete support in this regard.

Moreover, Dr. Mirza underscored the role pharmacists can play in creating awareness in the general population regarding injection safety and adverse effects of repeated usage of single-use syringes.

In the coming days, the Ministry of Health will initiate a media campaign to bring awareness in the general population about auto-disabling syringes.

if Pakistani can use it they will find a way to make it reuse. reverse engineering at its best. :bunny::chilli::cheesy::hitwall::devil::crazy:

.
The packaging should also be tamper proof sealed; so that when the seal containing the syringe is broken/opened it changes color from white to a highly visible color like purple or orange.

Also the penalties need to be higher then just suspension of the license. It’s needs to be a criminal offense for intentionally subverting these protections, especially in cases that result in serious injury/harm/disability or death

Why importing, why not developing it

Good step, this should have been done way to ago.
Other steps is making it mandatory to destroy the syringe using needle burner or syringe destroyer, so that they dont get recycled.
This has been very commonly used in India along with single use syringes.

I am also saying that why not manufacturing it

It takes good metallurgy and large-scale precision manufacturing abilities, both of which are not present in Pakistan currently, unfortunately, and requires massive investments to make possible.

To be able to implement this ASAP. It’s a way to bridge the gap in the ability and availability of local manufacturers to produce enough syringes to meet the goal. The local manufactures can ramp up production to meet the goal but it will take some time, and hence the need to import to cover the gap.

considering how prevalent the use of Single use syringes is in Pakistan and the risk that another major incident can occur, this is easily an investment worth making. If we can learn to keep costs low, we can also competitively export to recover investment costs.

Great idea, but a viable business plan may not be as easy.
