The real reason is to reduce fiscal deficit. They should not have reduced the petrol prices in the first place. Anyways international crude prices will keep on increasing in the next few weeks to months, as demand will increase with the easing of lockdown in major countries as well as the OPEC Russia reaching an agreement to reduce production.
Basically gov increased the prices in one go instead of gradually doing it over a couple of months. This will help them plug the revenue gap for a couple of months which was severely affected by Covid.
