Pakistan embassy has taken a half-page ad in todays Wall Street Journal. If I find a scanner, I'll scan it in, but here is the text.

Against a background of Pakistani flag and President Zardari
Pakistan and the United States - Victims of terror. Partners in peace

The USA and Pakistan can defeat terrorism together and bring prosperity to the Pakistani people. Pakistan is in the trenches; Pakistan is on the front lines. Pakistan is protecting the entire civilized world. 1700 soldiers killed. 3500 civilians dead. Tens of thousands maimed. This is Pakistan's war. This is Pakistani blood. But Pakistan cannot stand alone. President Asif Zardari has pledged to "wipe out the cancer of terrorism before it infects the entire planet". The USA and the world must stand by Pakistan's side in this decisive battle against the terrorists. The USA and Pakistan. Together in victory. Defeat is not an option.

I loved the decisive statment "This is Pakistan's war."

But on the other hand, with statements like "Pakistan is protecting the entire civilized world. " and "Pakistan cannot stand alone." it is not difficult to see why American media is constantly afloat with news of doomsday scenarios. If I were taking the ad out, I would have toned it down a bit.

Also loved the open statement of "Us against the terrorists" in sayng " The USA and the world must stand by Pakistan's side in this decisive battle against the terrorists"

My aim was not to put down Pakistan in anyway. I read the WSJ often and today found this ad. It was pretty dramatic and I loved many of the statements, but sitting here in USA, some parts of it appeared over the top.

That is all I was saying, was only criticizing from a (best possible) neutral perspective. I even separated my comments on the story into a different post from the actual text of the advertisement so that I in no way bias the opinion of readers (The highlighting in the original ads were left as is, none of them are mine).

Again not jealous of anything, but just surprised at Pak Embassy taking ad advertisement in a business publication. If anything I'd congratulate them for the direct appeal to the people and the straightforwardness.

smart thing to do, getting the people's support in the u.s. is the only thing that can motivate the u.s. congress

As I paid for my newspaper, I guess I am one of the target audience for the advertisement. So if any Pak embassy officials are reading this, that was my free and direct feedback to the ad. :-)
What Pakistan wants right now is for people to think and talk about in USA and for people to trust Pakistan enough to stand behind Zardari. I guess the ad served the first objective clearly and arguably will help with the second part.

The more common thing is to take an ad out in NY times. Do you by chance see anything there ?

These ad dollars have a more focused and influential audience than even the NYT- especially with our business leaders. Most everybody of influence reads the NYT. Absolutely everybody of influence will read the WSJ. That's my speculation and, perhaps, the rationale for the use of this venue.

Also, what American businessmen and politicians seem to think matters to Pakistan's business leaders, or so the fine print suggests.

Bring in the FDI gents...that is the message...that is the kind of help that Pakistan needs...risks are high but Pakistan promises to provide higher returns than most of the developing world. With aid money, there is no tangible return, with FDI, there is a much higher probability that the US would not only gain friends, but the US investors would make money as well.
