An Egyptian court last week annulled a maritime demarcation border accord with Saudi Arabia that would have seen Egypt lose control of two Red Sea islands. Protesting Egyptians took to the streets crying that they were taught at school that Tiran and Sanafir islands were Egyptian. The Judge ruled that Egyptian sovereignty over the islands holds and could not be amended in favor of another state.
2. The timing of the announcement, during a visit to Cairo by the Saudi king that coincided with the signing of “Aid Deals”, created the impression among many that the islands were sold. Angor Ada hand over, coincided, similarly with Afghan Ambassador’s visit to Rawalpindi.
3. Saudi and Egyptian officials claimed both the islands they belong to the kingdom and were only under Egyptian control because Saudi Arabia asked Egypt in 1950 to protect them.
4. Our media and intellectuals have given us, we the commoners, that Egypt was under the same “influence” of US as UK can independently do nothing in international issues. Example of it is given that due to un-liking of US the Egyptian army toppled the elected Islamic regime. No doubt Egypt also is a benefactor of Saudi “Aid”, likewise there is no doubt we too are. Almost every evening we the commoners are told by our rulers that we are sovereign in all respects and our khakees tell us every inch of the land would be protected.
5. One ex-serviceman has gone to the Lahore High Court on the issue. This senior citizen with open eyes now is looking forward to “see finally” the US influenced Egyptian court decision and that of coming from sovereign Pakistan where we are told everything is in accordance with the Law and pure Law.
