Pakistan Education Market: More Pakistani Students Studying Abroad

^^There are jobs in Pakistan, but the salary is quite low. On the other hand there are still jobs in the West for the smart and talented.

I came across an article about IBA, which is apparently one of top institutions in Pakistan, and the salary offered to the graduates is quite appalling.

similar problem is with INDIA!!
engineer and scientist are too low paid in our country
forget about any other streams

I don't know about Pakistan but in India engineer and scientist are paid very well in private sector compared to 20 years back - I did my BE in Chennai form a mid-level college and all my batch got campus recruited and I was offered 3.5 Lack per anum by TCS in 2007, also I believe in IIT and IIM some students get packages close to one crore per year now a day!!! and most get starting package above 20 lack per anum...

IITs become the 'Facebook' of placement network

KOLKATA: Just six days into the process, the IIT placement season has seen top salaries jump between 40% and 172% and average salaries go up between 15% and 30% over last year. Placement officials say going by the rush of recruiters, the number of foreign offers may show a two to threefold increase over last year. The number of recruiters and the offers have already surpassed last year's figures.

"The market is extremely buoyant," said SK Srivastava, professor in charge of training and placements at IIT Kharagpur, which has bagged the highest offer of the season so far. A student at the Kharagpur institute was offered a $135,000 compensation package (Rs 60 lakh) for a US-based position by Facebook, the world's most popular social networking site.

The Facebook offer is a near three-fold increase over last year's highest offer of Rs 22 lakh a year from financial services major Barclays at the institute and tops its Rs 38-lakh offer to a student of IIT Madras on Saturday.

New York-based financial services firm Tower Research Capital was the highest paymaster at IIT Madras last year with a Rs 28 lakh per annum offer.

"The number of offers (at IIT Bombay) is twice that of last year, with around 350 offers in the first five days," said Ravi Sinha, who heads placement at IIT Bombay.

While IIT Madras received 200 offers in the first five days, IIT Kharagpur reported more than 220 during the period. IIT Guwahati had more than 100 offers from 25 recruiters by the fourth day of the season, an increase of more than 50% over last year, according to professor-in-charge (training and placement cell) Saurabh Basu.

Among the global firms that have queued up at IIT campuses to offer foreign positions this year are electronics equipment maker Sony, miner Rio Tinto, marine transporter Tanker Pacific and consumer goods firm P&G.

The world's leading oil field services company, Schlumberger, a regular at the tech campuses in India, has offered a Rs 22 lakh per annum package to a student of IIT Guwahati. This is a 57% jump over last year's top offer of Rs 14 lakh, which was made by IBM India. Schlumberger is at the top at IIT Roorkee, too, with its Rs 26 lakh offer, a 44% jump over last year's highest offer of Rs 18 lakh made at the campus.

More recruiters are offering foreign postings this year as compared with last year. "From three companies offering foreign positions last year, we have 6-7 this time around already," said Anurag Nallapati, academic affairs secretary at IIT Madras.

The institute has already seen 260 recruiters signing up so far, 40 more than till May last year. "Last time, we had 15 foreign offers. We expect to double or triple that," said PK Jain, professor and coordinator (training and placement) at IIT Roorkee. Jain said IIT Roorkee students have received more than 170 offers so far, almost double that of last year.

About 150 companies have registered at Roorkee as against 70-80 last year. The average pay packets offered by these firms have registered a 30% jump so far. IIT Delhi, too, has seen a significant increase in the number of offers.

Besides regulars such as Shell, Morgan Stanley, McKinsey, ONGC, SAIL and ITC, new recruiters on the tech campuses include Facebook, Amazon and Opera Solutions. Placements will continue until the end of this month, when there will be a break of a few days. Recruitment will begin again in January. The placement season normally continues until April or May.

But things may be different this time around. "The way things are going, we hope to wrap up (the placements) by February-March," said Nallapati of IIT Madras.

Here in North America, Engineers generally are not paid that well. But doctors are like millionairs. It depends on profession and there are a lot of weird things. For example, a garbageman and a construction worker can make as high as $20/hour.--- Convert that into rupees----LOL i don't think that figure can ever be made possible to earn in India or even in Pakistan.

In my experience, North America is only good if you have a degree in business, law, and medicine. other than this won't get you around easily.

In Pakistan, India, and in the Middle East, Engineers are preferred the most.

Now going back to this thread, i see that if you have a western passport and a western university degree in anything than IMO, that person is all set to get good jobs and to get good money in the East.
Again all this is part of my experience and interaction between people....

Averages are often deceptive.

He said that although the average salary MBA graduates received was Rs42,000, the figure didn’t reflect the accurate job market situation. “While some graduates are getting Rs80,000 a month, there’re actually quite a few graduates who’re getting just a little over Rs30,000.”

Let me add that salaries vary widely from sector to sector even in the US.

Banks pay the highest while others, like FMCG companies, don't pay as much.

And this year there are more jobs in FMCG sector than in banking in Pakistan.

they have contributed enormously towards Pakistan.....I am one of those students.

I actually opted for Lahore's LUMS to do my MBA but was short-listed...I ended up in the US instead

Pakistan's private education is on par with the rest of the world. Where we have failed is providing up-to-standard state provided education/univ. facilities that are evenly spread out throughout the provinces. More work lies ahead, and it will take honest leadership as well as contribution by the people (better tax collection)

I dream of the day Pakistan will be a destination for foreign students; many of our international students hail from regional countries but Pakistan should be able to attract students from faraway places. Inshallah one day, once political landscape improves which hopefully it would.

IBA is a public funded institution of higher learning, not private.

IBA was set up with faculty and curriculum support from UPenn's Wharton School of Business, one of the top business schools in the US. IBA's alums are very successful around the world, including top jobs in the US and Europe.

Tell me, Do you people living in the U.S know Schullich school of business? That school has claimed it to be #1 and so did forbes... its actually in Canada. I just want to know how much it is known in your country.

HEC was a good work but was this year the budget was cutted by 40%.
This is creating too much problems for the students and creating a "brain-drain"

Not true in my experience here in Silicon Valley.

Engineers are very well paid in the high tech sector and are far richer than doctors or lawyers here.

OTOH, the primary care doctors are paupers compared to engineers.

Well in Alberta Canada, there is an oil city called Fort McMurray. Engineers do get paid well, but that it just one of the few places. I wouldn't go there as an engineer in -40+ temperature. That city is totally messed up. Also, there is one thing. The same burger you buy from Mcdonalds for $5 from a big city will be $10 there at fort mac. So when we are comparing salary to expenditure ratio, it is not good.

I don't know much about Silicon Valley or else where in the U.S Now days, engineers are getting kicked out of companies especially from Houston Texas....
Engineers are always looking for luck. if you are an oil related engineer then you have to look for contracts. That is why middle east is the best for them. Their whole economy depends every thing on that

i think a doctor in N.A depends on your race. I have had few relatives who were doctors in New York and in L.A but no patient went to see them because they are Pakistanis and they are muslims... This must be the reason why they are paupers.

I'm not talking about specifically Pakistani doctors...the specialists among them are very successful....it's the primary care doctors and pediatricians who are not paid well regardless of race, religion, or color or nationality. It has to do with how the health insurers pay for their services.

I have not seen the discrimination you talk about.

do a quick google on Dr. Azra Raza MD--she is based in NYC

one of the most celebrated anti-cancer specialists --and a true ambassador to our country

Lahore is the best education market in pakistan with students from all around world.

Our nation has been a very good source of human capital. I bet once the country is in right track people from the all of the globe will flocking back to rebuild the nation.

Engineers in Japan are paid very well plus we also gain an advantage of overvalued currency. Yen has been strong for 2 decades.
