National Security Adviser Naseer Khan Janjua on Tuesday said Pakistan “didn’t take part in the Soviet-Afghan War, nor was it behind the 9/11 attacks, yet it still bore the brunt of the damage they did”.

"At that time, the fear was that if Russia entered Afghanistan, Pakistan would be its next target. And for that, the concept of jihad [holy war] was exploited and our seminaries were used [to nurture the mujahideen]," he said while addressing an event held at the Pakistan Academy of Letters in Islamabad.

"Had we not supported Afghanistan back then, would the country still be standing?" the NSA asked, adding that if Pakistan had instead provided Russia with a "passageway", America may not have been "the only superpower" in the world today.

"Everyone abandoned Afghanistan once Russia lost, and all the militant elements established roots there," Janjua said.

Janjua was of the view that had the members of the Afghan Taliban been formally included in Afghanistan's political processes, the country would have been in a better state of affairs.

"Had the Taliban been included in the election, Afghanistan would not have been in such a fix today," he added.

"Pakistan has played the role of a front-line state for the last four decades,” he continued.

"We have to consider matters of national security keeping a view on the world," he added.

The NSA further said that national security includes the domains cyber security, world politics, the international economy as well as the globe's military strength.

"Pakistan has received many wounds in the war against terrorism," Janjua concluded.

"We are accused of playing a double game. But if we are supporting the Afghan Taliban, why would the Pakistani Taliban be standing against us today?"

Afghan war was curse on Pakistan.............

but everywhere Pakistanis claim that they almost single handedly brought down the soviet empire. I d suggest sticking to a single story.

Do you people ever read beyond the headline?

Still need an answer :o::cuckoo:

Pakistan made a blunder should have remained neutral or supported Russia in afghan war. No taliban/influx of jihadis and guns or spillover of militants.

He is talking like a Politician-

Soviet Union would have disintegrated anyway with or without Afghan war- It had little to with economic crisis in Russia- and the Political crisis that followed later- I am sorry to say It sounds like the sun would've have risen If Janjua kept sleeping all day-

Without that war Soviets would have left a Secular and non-Religious Afghanistan- Like the Central Asian states- With some Industries to go with- like Gas based-

He says that the world left Afghanistan at the hands of militants(Taliban)- and at the same time expresses his displeasure at the Militants(Taliban) being not allowed to take part in elections- As If the Taliban ever wanted to be a part of one- or even after all there years have any intention to be-

How can the world or any one make Taliban abandon their ideology of the Islamic emirate and accept democracy If they don't want- or If they do that would they be Taliban in the 1st place ?

In the end he seems to be mixing Afghan Taliban with Pakistan Taliban- and totally forgetting the good Taliban and the bad Taliban idea- which was openly suggested sometime back-

It would've been better had he talked like professional and suggested ideas openly- and not tried to politically address the American audience- and now that Pakistan is trying level best to make friends with Russia that beating the Soviet Union to make America sole superpower would not have done much good-

Atleast we have flexibility and we keep on analyze situation with the passage of time. We learn from our past mistakes. And we admit our mistakes...

The double game was actually quite dramatically exposed in Abbottabad with the OBL raid. Can the NSA explain why Pakistan did that in spite of claiming to be part of the US led alliance? Just one instance for example.
