Pakistan criticises US aid freeze

(AFP) – 4 hours ago

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Thursday angrily criticised US moves to freeze $700 million in aid, the latest sign of the fraying alliance that has been in deep crisis since NATO fire killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

"We believe that the move in the US Congress is not based on facts and takes narrow vision of overall situation hence wrong conclusions are unavoidable," foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Basit told reporters.

The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the legislation, which the Senate is expected to vote on as early as Thursday.

The bill would freeze the aid, pending assurances that Islamabad has taken steps to thwart militants who use improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against US-led forces in Afghanistan.

"If this legislation becomes law, we'll work with the government of Pakistan on how we can fulfill the requirements. But, this requires us to maintain a strategic perspective," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Pakistan shut down the vital US supply line into neighbouring Afghanistan and ordered US personnel to leave the Shamsi air base, reportedly used as a hub by CIA drones, after attacks killed 24 soldiers on November 26.

Pakistan says it is reviewing terms of engagements with the United States and NATO, but parliament has so far stopped short of announcing any specific measures pending a joint session for which no date has been called.

A parliamentary committee is considering a proposal to scrap tax exemptions on NATO goods shipped to Pakistan and trucked to the Afghan border.

The powerful military, anyway, is considered the final arbiter of policy. It has bolstered its air defence systems on the Afghan border, where officials say 160,000 troops are deployed.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited American troops in Afghanistan close to the Pakistani border on Wednesday, calling on Islamabad to secure its side of the border, by cracking down on Taliban havens on its territory.

"I think the real question has to be what has been done on the Afghan side of the border," the Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman told reporters.

"Pakistan cannot be held responsible for weaknesses and loopholes on the other side of the border," he added.

So did anyone expect stopping the supply routes would not have a response? The ramifications go far beyond just aid.

Both sides must learn to work these issues out.

That is good to know, if it remains steadfastly true.

VC - This so called aid never gets to the destination or the place its needed and simply ends up in third party accounts such as corrupt politicians.USA would be doing us a favour if they were to keep this aid as it will give Pakistan an oppertunity to stand on its own feet - mid 90s there was sanctions and we did remarkably well. Lets hope it stays in place. I believe only 10% of US aid hits the destination its aimed for.

Well, the Kerry-Lugar bill would have ensured that audit trails and direct disbursements were ensured, but sadly the Pakistan Army scuttled that to the nation's detriment.

why pakistan wants a US aid when they actually do not want to figh theirs(US) war on terror any more..inspite of critisizing US pakis should use this opporitunity to scrap all militiary ties nd ask them to vacate all pakistani bases asap..

I dont believe its the army - it perhaps is down to our international superstar Swiss account specialist corrupt politicos that are the guilty party. I also believe full well the US administration know where it goes but don't mind - as long as Pakistan plays ball with them

So these people who are gobbling up the aid money.. You think they will become honest to God people when the aid stops and will not siphon money from other sources within Pakistan economy.. If yes, then cool.. Though being practical, I dont think thats the case..

i know you want Pakistan to remain an aid dependent country......i'm not sure if you're having an interest in that, i'm not sure at all.

and I have discussed this whole thing so many times.....$700m is peanuts....not for you and I, but on an aggregate macro level it's sheer peanuts.

a cut in civilian aid to Pakistan would indeed harm some social programs and other initiatives but in terms of economy it only effects 0.14% of our GDP growth --for the current fiscal year maybe even less

the supply routes are shut down because over 2 dozen soldiers were killed in a 2 hour accidental engagement. Thats why it's closed.

but yes, the ramifications do go beyond just so-called "aid". . . But fear is no policy, surrender is no option. When you make a decision (based on a certain status quo), stand firm on it.

as long as our interests, our security-concerns are ignored

And I believe thats true.. Frankly, if I go to a shop and buy something, I pay the cash clerk and move on.. I really dont care whether the cash clerk follows the cash process or simply pockets the money..

a sound decision

I thought Pakistan did not need the aid.. Then why this Kolaveri Di ???

no, actually india is a much larger recipient of aid and it's been that case for past several decades

yeah i cn see that..
Already three trollin threads on US AID FREEZE.

those threads are worthless......

as worthless as this thread, nothing good's gonna come out of it

I................. I also believe full well the US administration know where it goes but don't mind - as long as Pakistan plays ball with them

Of course. As long as Pakistan play ball, the rest of it is Pakistan's internal problem from a US perceptive, and rightly so.
