FAISALABAD - Pakistan can generate 50,000 MW of hydro electricity but only about 6,595 MW has been developed for the last 50 years, presenting a grim picture.

This was stated by experts at the International Conference on “Solar and Bio Energy System” arranged by the Department of Farm Machinery and Power, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. The session was presided over by Punjab Energy Department Secretary Rab Nawaz.

Rab Nawaz said the Punjab government would encourage the UAF for setting up a power plant to generate one megawatt of electricity using solar and solid waste technologies in a bid to promote technology in the country. He urged UAF scientists to develop and promote solar and solid waste energy mechanism at university campus in order to emerge the UAF as ever first environment friendly ‘Green University’ of the country.

The Punjab Energy Department Secretary said power circular debt was standing at Rs570 billion and it was need of the hour to promote other sources of power. He urged the university to establish model biogas plant from the UAF’s farm containing 300 animals. He praised UAF role for playing a vital role in increasing the agricultural productivity and globalisation by attracting foreign delegates.

You cant get rid of Power Problems in 1 Yr
Your current power shortage of 6000 MW will require atleast 5 yrs of continuous 10% yearly growth in power Generation to solve this crises , and frankly as long as Zardari or Nawaz Ganja Sharif are in Power then i dont see that Happening , So My advice would be , to get someone New , smart and Aggressive elected as PM
ie Get Imran Khan elected to PM and I believe that power shortage will be significantly reduced by 2016

Its a Well Known Fact that South Asia as a whole has a lot of potential to generate electricity from water , thanks mainly due to the Himalayas and there glaciers
But the Problem is that not Many countries have realized this fact

As the article Suggest , Pakistan Has Potential to generate 50000 MW of Hydroelectric Power , but only Managed to generate 6595 MW
Frankly i think that is mainly down to the idiots in Power in Pakistan and by that i mean Zardari , Coz as far as I remember India has added 40000 MW of Power to National Grid since Zardari came to power while Pakistan has not even Managed to add 1000 MW to the grid
(By power I mean cumulative Thermal , Hydro and wind )

Let me give you an example of Bhutan which has a Hydroelectric Potential of 30000 MW but a Domestic Demand of barely 1000 MW , Now what these guys have done is given access to Indian companies to set up power Project in there country for export of Electricity to India
Take for example the Tala Hydroelectricity Project which Generates 4865 MW of Electricity which is entirely exported to India WHILE Bhutan Gets 250 Million USD a yr as Payment for this electricity which amounts to 18% of there GDP and Pays for 85% of there National Budget
Bhutan Plans to export 10000 MW of electricity to India in 2020 and Increase it to 20000 MW in 2030

Another is the Case of Nepal , which has a potential of 40000 MW of Hydropower but a demand of only 1500 MW
Indian Companies are Building 8 Dams in Nepal to generate 6000 MW in total , as per the agreement Nepal will get 1500 MW of electricity for free and Rest will be diverted to India without any charge

Indian companies had plans to Invest 10 Billion USD in Nepal to generate another 10000 MW of Hydro Power but Now it seems unlikely thanks to Nepali Maoist

Pakistan can achieve many things but we lack the leadership. We have the bloodsucking elite ruling the country who dont care about the country or the people, they just care about their seats and their swiss banks accounts.

Vote for Imran Khan. The only hope for Pakistan.

To generate about 1000MW an investment of $3-4 billion is needed and the case is many can't afford to invest this much amount to build the dam.

Can't India invest and generate it, the way we're doing it in Nepal and Bhutan?

Same with India too, only difference is
Vote for Narendra Modi. The only hope for India

U just place place Wind turbines in coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan u will get minimum 30000- 35000MW electricity and Pakistan total need is I guess 18000MV

Chinese are even ready to invest but politics, the provinces say they are not given part of profit from existing dams and hydro projects then why we displace hundred of thousands of people?
If we get rid of electricity theft,we will give profit to all share holders and will be able to return the loans taken for these projects.
Managing Finance is a game,no investor will come to us with this situation.

Same with India too, only difference is
Vote for Narendra Modi. The only hope for India
no Bhai .. not that easy Here it`s not just one man affair (aap jante hain)..our power generation plans have already been laid and wrok is progress everywhere with or without Modi..

Really a Shame for Us and Pakistan:mamba:

Can't India invest and generate it, the way we're doing it in Nepal and Bhutan?
...I think a better option would be India making 'run-on -river' power plants on the western rivers of Indus treaty ..and give some electricity to pakistn free as fee, as done with Nepal.
pakistan will get water and the power, without spending any penny.:yahoo:
But this need broader & mature thinking and bold initiative.. Which I think Nawaz Sharif has. ( IMO, Imran Khan lacks independence and is too much dependent on establishment or end up so after being elected)

You mean invest in Hydroelectric Power Projects In India

Well We are Doing it Right Now
currently we have around 120 Hydroelectric Power Projects under construction In India , out of which 33 are in J&K and 20 in NorthEast
Currently we Produce 38000 MW of Hydro Power and this will Rise to 84000 MW by 2022
But We are facing problems in starting new Hydro Power Projects , Thats mainly due to protests by Anti Social Activists like Aruna Roy , Arundati Roy , and also by Anna Hazare and co , who have fooled illiterate villagers to protest against Hydro Power Project , even after receiving adequate compensation from the government for uprooting them from there villages

I am sure many of you remember the Narmada Bachao Andolan Spearheaded by our favorite TrollBitch Arundati Roy
where The villagers started protesting against Construction of Dam on Narmada River , even after NAMO guaranteed that villagers will receive a compensation of Rs 10-18 Lacs as well as Land at another location .
Now the amount of compensation offered was more than what these illiterate villagers could save in there entire life , and still they protested
