13 percent rise in defence budget 2013-14 proposed


ISLAMABAD: The defence budget proposal for the financial year 2013-14 has been prepared, which envisages overall 13 percent increase, taking the total defence budget allocation to Rs627 billion, Geo News reported.

The ministry of finance and planning commission in a meeting here mulled over the budget allocations of various ministries including the ministry of defence.

Adviser ministry of finance, Asad Amin presiding over the meeting approved a 13 percent increase in the defence budget 2013-14, taking the total allocation to Rs627 billion as against the 2012-13 budget allocation of Rs545 billion, which was later raised to Rs570 billion.

That's not much of an increase if you factor in the rate of inflation which is projected at 7%. So, in real terms the defense budget has increased by only about 6%.

Considering the PA's commitments - sustained counter insurgency operations resulting in wear and tear of equipment, spares and replacements etc - a 10% increase in real terms would have been ideal.

But hey! Who the dickens am I to comment?
