Last year as well, Punjab endured a similar problem, which caused breathing issues for people outdoors.

The “enhanced incursion of smoke” due to crop stubble burning and emissions from coal power plants in India has led to a high concentration of smog in the border states of Punjab and Sindh, Pakistan officials have claimed.

The situation was particularly “alarming” in south and central regions of Pakistan’s Punjab, according to a report in the Dawn. Officials claimed that emissions from the coal-fired power plant in Pakistan Sahiwal region were also contributing to pollutants causing smog in the Punjab province.

People in Lahore and other cities in Punjab have been grappling with the problem arising out of smog for the last three or four days, with the authorities trying their best to contain the prevailing situation. Last year as well, Punjab endured a similar problem, which caused breathing issues for people outdoors.

Officials also claimed that Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission spotted 2,620 fire incidents via satellite in Indian side of Punjab in the last 24 hours, while there were only 27 such case in Pakistan’s Punjab.

According to Pakistan’s Environment Protection Department, 13 coal power plants in Indian states of Punjab and Rajasthan are causing thick smog in Pakistan regions such as Bahawalpur, Multan, Okara, Pakpattan, Chiniot and Faisalabad.

“Only rain and strong westerly wind can reverse the worsening situation,” a Pakistan Met department official was quoted as saying by the daily.
