BEIJING : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani has said Pakistan be given full membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Prime minister said this while addressing SCO Council of Heads of Government Meeting here Wednesday.

He proposed four pronged strategy for expansion of SCO adding "Pakistan has remained part of this organization for four years. We now want to be accorded full membership of it. This demand on our part demonstrates the fact that Pakistan is eager to work together with other nations. Pakistan wants to share economic and strategic matters with member countries of SCO".

Prime minister called for formation of SCO banking association and business council adding free trade was the only option with us to deal with regional financial crisis.

He urged the member countries of SCO to pursue joint vision to achieve the objectives of regional peace and development . The need is there to adopt a joint strategy to counter the challenges like global economic melt down, terrorism, extremism, threats posed to environment, energy and food crisis, he underlined.

High level meetings should be held between the permanent members and observers of the SCO, he stressed.

A stable and peaceful Afghanistan was not only in the interest of Pakistan but it was also in the interest of the whole region, he reiterated. The forthcoming crisis could be countered through joint and concerted efforts, he added.

"If free trade mechanism is developed among the member countries then we can overcome problems like energy", he maintained.

He cautioned the region was facing threat of terrorism adding all the countries would have to devise comprehensive and shared strategy to face this challenge. People of Pakistan had rendered unprecedented sacrifices in war against terrorism, he held.

"It is matter of pleasure for me to visit Beijing. China has crossed many milestones during the last 60 years. We are deeply impressed by the development and economic stability of China and this factor is serving as sources of encouragement for us. Bilateral friendly relations between Pakistan and China are gaining strength day by day", he announced.

This is rather a show of solidarity of Pakistan with China. It seems to me having a full membership in SCO isn't that important to Pak. As a matter of fact, full membership in SCO isn't that good for Pak. I hope China wouldn't actively promote Pak's full membership.

Thank you Pak. :smitten::pakistan:

How this will help actually. They are allready having good trade.

What you mean? Why you think not good for Pakistan?

SCO is a political organization created by China/Russia to counter the NATO influence in Russia proper, and US/Japan in Asia Pacific.

Pak doesn't necessarily need to get involved in this NATO vs. SCO thing.
I don't think there is anything in it for Pak. Pak/China I don't have to say more. Pak can independently work their relationship with Russia as an observer already on the SCO platform as an added opportunity. In the mean time, it also will have the political free room to work with NATO countries.

Observer status and fulll membership is totally different concept. Being an observer only implies you are friendly to the party. A full membership is a political stand, even if SCO's charter is quite ambiguous.

I was quite confuse with the name of org. which starts from Shanghai so I thought it was only of China. Now got it. It involves bit large strategy in economy.

in the long run, Pakistan will benefit from being accepted as full membership of sco in so many aspects such as regional security, open markets and anti-terrorism. Pakistan has been asking for many years for being a full-member to counter India's advantage in the sub-continent and china always hold a supportive attitude towards pakistan's requires.

fully awared Pakistan's purpose, India entered the sco as an observer too and it's total aim is to counteract Pakistan's efforts. with the supports from its' traditional alliance Russia, Indian has done a quite good job to wreck Pakistan's work.

the number one purpose of sco is to ease the tension among central asian countries, to settle the border disputes and to anti-terrorism also to counteract US's force within the region. so at present and near future, Pakistan's require may not be an important issue within the sco and with the resist or reluctance of russia, pakistan may not be accepted as a full member. but, that dose not mean pakistan have made a mistake. both china and Pakistan should work on projects that benefit not only the members but also the observers. and if pakistan (also with the real stability of afganistan) could provide central asia with a port in indian ocean, the countries of central asia may change their attitudes

Lovely how did i miss that :)

I had been a advocating that Pakistan should strive for joining it. Its pleasent to know this new development

Even Russian President Vladimir Putin has assured of his country's support for Pakistan to JOIN S-C-O .

Do you think that Russia and China only capable to counter NATO (28 STATES members)?

Honestly, NATO can defeat SCO easily due to lack of supports, resources, and cooperations.

yes it is may friend...... i would urge you to read the history/background of this organisation from google search engine.......... I have talked on this issue before so don't want to browse again to explain the future of SCO

All i want to say is, If Iran and Pakistan join SCO it can counter NATO as well regardless of their power.......... and there is a strong possibility that India too will join SCO so it may counter NATO forces as well.

Couple of years ago there was a strong possibility of India joining the SCO and they were very much interested but later on western countries started supporting India for their own cause and somehow didn't want SCO to stand against NATO and eventually India was refused to become the full member until certain issues are resolved

now if India keep sitting in the lap of Americans there is no way India join SCO and if she remains nuteral ...................... well lets see what happens in future

I don't know if it is a good news or bad news.... all I can do is to pray for the best of Pakistan

this is not a good news.............. this is an excellent news ........ if ever happened :pakistan:

SCO official stance is that it is not a military block like nato but rather a organization for the cooperation between member nations. russia as of late have been lobbying for a security arm for the sco but nothing has been decided as yet. pakistan joining may be a good thing in terms of better cooperation with other members of sco like russia and other central asian nations.

i think pak has alot to gain from sco membership, and not much at all to gain with nato alliances.
