Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & Maldives supports China’s greater role in SAARC

China is seeking an active role in the eight-member South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, an official said Friday, in a move likely to be resisted by India.

The eight-member grouping wraps up a summit Friday in the Maldives marked by talks between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, whose leaders spoke of a "new chapter" in relations.

Maldivian officials said China, an observer along with the United States, Japan and the European Union, was expecting a higher profile as a "dialogue partner" in the light of Beijing's increased strategic interest in many South Asian states.

Hectic behind-the-scenes moves were under way over China's bid to elevate its status, diplomatic sources told AFP, adding that Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Sri Lanka appeared in favour.

Beijing was said to be unhappy being a mere observer and wanted a more active role as a "dialogue partner" because of its investment in the economies of many member states.

India would likely be suspicious of any greater Chinese role. New Delhi has watched with anxiety as Beijing has forged ties with many countries in the South Asia region, often by dispensing aid and soft loans for infrastructure.

Beijing established an embassy in the Maldivian capital Male just two days before SAARC leaders opened their 17th summit in the Addu atoll, the southernmost point in the archipelago on Thursday.

The summit is expected to endorse a draft agreement which calls for the "comprehensive review of all matters relating to SAARC's engagement with observers, including the question of dialogue partnership."

UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are better candidates .... and will find warm welcome from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Aghanistan. (These countries have huge South Asian population, shared culture, religion etc). And all SAARC countries have friendly relations with these. This will make Arabian sea the focal point of new SAARC.

On the other side, Thailand, Singapore and Myanmar would find warm welcome from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan (same reasons - large South Asian population, shared historical culture etc.). This will make Bay of Bengal the focal point of new SAARC.

Tibet could have been welcome, if it were a separate country .. but since it is not, it has no chance. And inviting Dalai Lama govt will unnecessarily lead to unwanted noise.

China is closer to the two koreas and japan. It's economy is also closely related to Japan and South Korea (and Taiwan). It should better seek a membership there.

In any case, China has chosen to keep in intentions undefined (which is standard Chinese policy in many matters). So, it's anyone's guess why they want to join SAARC. Disrupt it??

SAARC is disfunctional due to the existence of India. So we need to form a better organized structure for the benefits of people in the region.

... And China isn't in the region.

Anyway, funny to see China begging for membership ...... current SAARC countries shoulp open a "paid membership" option.

Pay $2 Billion to each SAARC member, to bypass the veto -- promise Hu Jintao will get a good hotel room and speaking time for $ 16 Billion bill.

It's so funny the read the post from Pakistani members.

It is well known that it is Pakistan and Pakistan alone that has never let SAARC to function and acheive its potential. They have been the biggest drag for the whole reason.

But over here they are conveniently forgetting this and ULTA they are blaming India.

Their logic is , India is big so blame is on India.....wo kahte hain na, ziska gaadi bada ho to hai, accident mein usiki galti hoti hai...:hang2:
