DHAKA, Bangladesh

Top diplomats of Bangladesh and Pakistan held talks recently to promote bilateral relations in a possible thaw, according to official sources.

"Both sides agreed to promote bilateral relations with a forward looking approach," Pakistan's High Commissioner in Dhaka Imran Ahmed Siddiqui told Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.

Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971 following an armed conflict. Relations between the two countries, separated by large swathes of Indian territory, have since been frosty.

Referring to the talks with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on July 1, Siddiqui added: “The two sides briefed each other on the COVID-19 situation in their respective countries and precautionary and preventive measures being taken.”

“We want stronger relations with brotherly Bangladesh in all walks of life. We share common bonds of history, religion and culture,” he added.

The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry did not issue a statement about the meeting.

Seriously thaw ? What thaw ?

A thaw is when two countries with long standing issues, cooperate to resolve the issues amicably.

What possible grievances does Pakistan have with Bangladesh, that needs solving before they can have better diplomatic relations with us ?

Inability and/or unwillingness to deal with Hasina is a diplomatic failure on their part, there's nothing that can be done about it unless they want to. Hasina maybe be a rock but she's no fool either, if the right moves are made, she will reciprocate.

Anyhow, realistically speaking the two countries don't really have much to gain from each other anyway.

Both countries are moving along just fine with the current bare minimum of diplomatic relations, I don't see why it shouldn't stay the way it is.

Right now amid a pandemic isn't the right time for these things anyway. The ultra nationalist lot in Dhaka will protest, if there are any moves on account of better relations with Pakistan.

And the ultra nationalist Pakistanis, on here and elsewhere, will be just as sore everytime they hear anything about Bangladesh and/or Hasina.

So don't go poking people in the eye, keep it the way it is; keep the status quo.

For now.

The Hypocrisy laden statement in Red above is the highlight.....If that would have been the case (of sharing common bonds of history, religion and culture)...why Urdu was imposed over Bengali language, Why **** leaders said Your there, We Here?....Why Bengali culture was never endorsed by Tall, Fair Punjabi Leaders of the past......There was nothing common between East and West Pakistan's culture/language other than religion.

Don't open that can of worms please, this thread is begging for a troll invasion as it is.

Hopefully, this thread isn't turned into another mudslinging fest.

Besides, they thought back then that we had religion in 'common' but the reality is far from that.

The Bengali way practising Islam is very different from the way it is done in Pakistan or India. The religiosity of the people in the two countries also varies alot. So when people say we have religion in common, it's doesn't mean much.

Thaw probably isn't the best word to use. the actual 'thawing' happened decades ago during Bangladesh's military regime

I hope our impulsive FM has not uttered Brother-Sister relationship while in talks with Pakistani Envoy.

Hasina doesn't want to move forward. She continues to make BD a lackey of India. Until the day BD stops toing Indian line and come up with independent foreign policy there can never be good relations. I understand that BD shares a border with India so naturally it has to keep Indian sensitivities in mind but that does not mean, that BD becomes hostile to Pakistan and becomes more loyal than the king.

A weak BD's protection from the Indian diplomatic onslaught lies with good and workable relationship with Pakistan. '71 war happened 50 years ago. It is time we sit and talk together so that India stops humiliating us by introducing many new laws targeting Bangladesh.

The two countries unity is a pre-requisite for safeguarding our own people as well as our Muslim brothers who had no other way than to accept India as their own country. Their treatment by Hindu majority India depends upon the unity between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Try being neighbours with an increasingly aggressive sanghi run India while having no nukes. An India which would've pinned Pakistan to the wall decades ago, had Pakistan not developed nuclear weapons.

Good luck!

You can't imagine what our government is going through.

Bear in mind we don't have any Muslim neighbours to help us, if India decides to invade us, civilians will have nowhere to seek refuge.

The issue is more delicate than you can imagine while sitting in Pakistan.

There are bigger issues and fishes to fry then some historical leftovers between our people. There is a over fed hydra in our neighbour which is threatening our national security in many ways that needs to be dealt with.

Then make your move, we are watching and waiting.

I already mentioned that i can understand BD sensitivities however Hasina is going way beyond that and she does so because of her personal hatred towards Pakistan. As for India pinning us to the wall, the only time India was able to was when you guys helped them other wise Pakistan have stood on its own without nuclear weapons. We did so in 49 in 65.

The Indian armed forces of 2020 are not the same as they were in 65.

Anyhow, I'm not going to argue with you over this.

Sanghi run India is a threat to the region's stability.

Only country with an expansionist foreign policy in the region is sanghi run India.
