Pakistan army needs people's support: Kiyani

ISLAMABAD: Asserting that the will of the people is "decisive", Pakistan's new Army Chief Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani on Wednesday said harmony between socio-political and military strategies will usher in long-term peace and stability in the country, which is going to polls next month.

In his first public comments on the country's political scenario since he took over from President Pervez Musharraf last month, Kiyani told military officers at Kharian Garrison in Punjab province that popular support for the army is "critical".

"It was the harmonisation of the socio-political, administrative and military strategies that would usher in an environment of peace and stability in the long term," he said addressing the officers during a visit to the garrison.

"Ultimately, it is the will of the people and their support that is decisive. It is critical that the Pakistan Army's efforts are backed by the nation," Kiyani was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations.

His comments assume significance as they come ahead of the general election, which President Pervez Musharraf vowed to hold on January 8.

Kiyani said the nation held the army in "high esteem" and this "national support was crucial to synergise national effort".

He accompanied Musharraf on Wednesday to Kharian cantonment, where the President paid a visit to the 44 Self Propelled Regiment of the Artillery.

The army statement said Lt Gen Sajjad Akram, the commander of Mangla Corps, was present during Kiyani's address. It was not immediately clear whether Musharraf was present during Kiyani's speech.

. . . . .
Sorry to say this but what he is saying is something that all CoAS have said including Musharraf who is on record saying that PA should be supported by the nation and not maligned by vested interests.

. .
good job. i think his main test will come when he tries to distance the army from politics. if he somehow pulls that off then he will be the greatest CoAS in the history of the pakistani army

They have robbed the country for past 60 years and they want public support, no chance only those who are foolish enough not to see through the lamb uniform of pak army will support it, but those who havw wisen with times offer no support.

Why bother sir? He for some sort of personal agenda of his just keeps trolling and ranting against pakistan and PA.

People of Pakistan did it in past and will always support our Army. Problem only comes where people (civil society) think that Army is interfering in their domain , likewise Army also does not like if people interfere in their areas. Any disbalence is respective authorities is neither good for Army nor for public.

Its time to forget the past differences. Let Army do what it does best i.e defend Pakistan from any internal/external aggression and let civilian leadership run the country the way it should be run i.e Pakistan first.

My prayers are with Gen Kiyani and I wish him success in his role as CoAS and I hope he will maintain the balence and assist civilian leadership in bringing Pakistan out of the difficult times we are passing through.
