Indians were never one country or people - there were 500 princely states during the British era. The small states simply allied with the powerful British or were annexed. The British also had a far superior military.

And that's how they colonized North America as well. The natives there had no common kingdom or country.

They got paid to serve the Qataris and so did police departments of France, Turkey and a number of countries, so what's the problem?
