Indians were never one country or people - there were 500 princely states during the British era. The small states simply allied with the powerful British or were annexed. The British also had a far superior military.
And that's how they colonized North America as well. The natives there had no common kingdom or country.
They were scattered across the continent with no common tribe or ethnicity or religion.
