Extension makes sense if a military operation of significant strategic value is underway.
The financial profile of military is already set in place. The guarantees to foreign stake holders have been given also. Now further statements are coming out for them that the new projects to be undertaken with military guarantee will go smoothly. It’s an era where ksa, China etc puts its trust in military than civilian government because they know military will stay, come what may.
What’s actually required is a COAS who ignores the issues faced by civilian leadership in leading Pakistan but that became an excuse for martial law in the past. However, the COAS knows military has a firm foothold in local defence industry as well as other financial ventures like FFC, FFBL, Askari, DHA etc, so concentration should be solely on defence even if the country is going towards an economic collapse, but here the concept of saviour is coming in, which is really unnecessary since it makes military a stakeholder too and that induces financial corruption within military which will then be left to handle for the next COAS.
Back in mushy era, the military’s operational decision making went to VCOAS since mushy had other ideas to gain power and here now it’s becoming about consolidating another foothold in governance through business, loans and financial means.
Going this much deep into political and economical stanzas even for sake of revival was never required. Alienating from these would have been much better but then sometimes the stake holders want guarantee from military and this has got to end.
