Pakistan approaches World Bank after India builds Kishanganga on Neelum

Folks on both sides should read a little bit about IWT and what it allows and doesnt allow rather than p*** is the winds.

India is allowed to build storage on Western rivers only to a limited extent- whatever water enters the dam must leave within 24 hrs. India can cause a "flood" or "drought" only for 24 hours nothing more than that.

If you believe war has nothing to do with economy then do you care to explain why the biggest economy is the biggest military power too? Or do you believe Americans are the most brave and courageous? The fact is they don't have to even step on the ground heck or be there to kill the most bravest fighters and that is all because of money. Anyways the dam is built, you guys are not on good terms with the US, they are the ones that run WB and India is too big and powerful for anybody to pressurise us. Other than that if you want to fight a war with a broken economy be our guest.

It is not like that rivers follow the dynamics of a pipe connected to a tap where water flows in the same proportion till the end.

Indus river has its origin in China and it passes a small area in Indian Kashmir region...and most important thing is it has a very wide catchment area in the Pakistan landmass in Gilgit Baltistan, where it is fed by melting glaciers and ice caps of Saltoro, Baltoro, and about 50 plus huge glaciers which feds the Indus river. Pakistan has the 2nd highest amount of Glaciers after the north poles. So it is all in Pakistan control, the water catchment area...India simply cannot stop it.

Yes lower rivers given to India like Ravi, Beas and Sutlej can be controlled by India.

Reality: India is using only 4% of the permitted 20%. So it’s well within its rights
  • 3 Eastern rivers - Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and their tributaries
  • 3 Western rivers - Indus, Jhelum, Chenab and their tributaries(Given to Pakistan)
  • The waters of Eastern rivers are fully allocated to India. The annual average flow of these rivers is 33 Million Acre Feet (MAF)
  • The annual average flow of Western rivers is 135 MAF
  • India can use 20% (27 MAF) of Western rivers water can be used by India for domestic use, non consumptive use such as navigation, flood control, agriculture and power generation
  • Only 4% (5.4 MAF) of Western rivers water is used by India due to lack of storage facilities
  • Out of 5.4 MAF, 3.6 MAF is used for general use, power generation etc. Rest is used for agriculture

Myth vs reality in the Indus Waters Treaty: Can India stop water flow to Pak?

The nothing more than that is a bit of an understatement. Flash floods in hilly terrain and in areas devoid of vegetation even for a couple of minutes can be the cause of immeasurable devastation.

One failure after another from those ruling Pakistan. They should be hanged, any other punishment is just not enough.

I mean come on. Can you blame them? Your media reports on only one thing. Panama Paper. 24/7. Thats what people are interested in. Their evening entertainment/masala! So when people can not show any intereste, do you think the elected representatives will show any interest?

Pakistan has more glaciers than almost anywhere on Earth. But they are at risk.

With 7,253 known glaciers, including 543 in the Chitral Valley, there is more glacial ice in Pakistan than anywhere on Earth outside the polar regions, according to various studies. Those glaciers feed rivers that account for about 75 percent of the stored-water supply in the country of at least 180 million.

...why India cannot stop the flow of water to Pakistan, the western rivers including Indus. Lots of hue and cry on both sides though.

But as in many other parts of the world, researchers say, Pakistan’s glaciers are receding, especially those at lower elevations, including here in the Hindu Kush mountain range in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Among the causes cited by scientists: diminished snowfall, higher temperatures, heavier summer rainstorms and rampant deforestation.

To many, the 1,000-square-mile Chitral Valley has become a case study of what could await the rest of the world if climate change accelerates, turning life-supporting mountains into new markers of human misery.

So Pakistan need to start getting serious about preservation of these precious glaciers, about global warming and the rising temperatures, and how to stop the carbon footprint, the fossil fuel toxins, depletion of Ozone layer..so on and so forth.

A case in point is the billion trees plantation in KPK region...more projects like this is needed.

Which kind of trees ? because planting trees without knowing their needs, their behaviour, will tend to bring more destruction than anything else.

@all, our feodal system is killing us. Seems, that our feodal leaders want us starving thirsty, they would be able to have more control over normal people.

we lost water"war" if we could call it war.

It was acknowledged by IUCN, was a partner as well, other world bodies in preservation and 'Global warming' issues.

KPK Launches Billion-tree Drive – A Contribution to Global Forestation Campaign, IUCN

Government of Khyber Pakthunkhwa in collaboration with IUCN launched its billion-tree campaign as a contribution to the global Bonn Challenge on occasion the World Environment Day today, Islamabad. The Bonn Challenge was established at a ministerial roundtable in September 2011, at the invitation of the German Government and IUCN. It calls for the restoration of 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded lands by 2020.The KPK government had especially invited the IUCN President, Mr. Xinsheng Zhang to the inaugural ceremony.

These glaciers feed rivers that account for about 75 percent of the stored-water supply in the country of at least 200 million...

well all those who ruled Pakistan previously were having some kind of soft corner for india. All the military dictators soo far were born in pre partition (1947) era and our political leadership were always pro indians till now so you can say that it is partly deliberately on our leaders part that they didnt pursue water issues soo aggressively because of their soft corner for india , corruption , and short term goals in which water as a long term goal never got priority . however if Imran Khan's party wins the elections who happens to b a true opposition to the elites and a lone ranger ( even he has many bad apples from other parties too ) then a nationalist government will come in place and they will work and prioritize it. and if there will be any coup then it will b a real and different kind of military coup because 1. it wont b backed by US as previously all the coups were backed by US but this time it will will b backed by China 2. all the present generals are born in Pakistan after partition soo they have more sense of being Pakistani than previous dictators( they had this sense that we were one ppl and all that non sense ) sooo things will change in next 5yrs and ww3 is coming :)

That was a handful to read. Just so I get it right, you have said:
1. India won the water wars at the arbitration courts because - pak generals were secretly pro Indians since they were born in India before the partition (one wonders about the 3-4 wars you guys had wth India by the same generals and how that fits in your narrative)

2. You wish upon Pakistan while sitting in another country, a military coup, because this time it is going to be better (because democracy is not for the Islamic state of Pakistan and its citizens apparently), since the generals, current batch, have changed sides from being dependent on the U.S. to towards China
