Pakistan to get guided missile frigate from US
Updated at: 2257 PST, Tuesday, April 20, 2010
WASHINGTON: Pakistan and United States has signed the contract for the transfer of the guided missile frigate USS McInerney here on Tuesday.

Capton Abdur Rehman, defence Procurement Attache signed the contract on behalf of Pakistan Navy.

The $ 65 million contract will enable Pakistan to take over USS McInerney at US Naval station Mayport, Florida on August 31 this year after which it will be commissioned as PNS AlAMGHIR.

A comprehensive refurbishment of the ship will be undertaken under the supervision of US Navy which will be completed in Jan. 2011.

Succesful culmination of this contarct will also pave way for acquisition of more vessels of same class for Pakistan navy to raise a squadron of 8 Perry Class Frigates. This will greatly enhance operational readiness of Pakistan navy.

USS McInerney was the second ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigates and first US Navy ship named for US Vice Admiral Francis McInerney (18991956).

In September 2008 the US Congress had approved selling the frigate to Pakistan with a delivery date of August 2010. Citing the Foreign Assistance ACT and the Arms Export Control Act.

Pakistan is considered a major non NATO Ally and is able to receive older unneeded US military equipment.

Additionally, the 32-year-old frigate will be given a 65 million dollar refurbishment including anti-submarine capability paid for with foreign military aid provided by the U.S to friendly countries.

Pakistan will pay $78 million for 30-year-old frigate.

Wondering what accounts for the 78-65=$13 million difference between transfer payment and refurb-price: what else is in the contract?

Also note the talk of a squadron of 8 FFGs of the OHP variety

Thats a huge boost in PN naval capability. Details still have to emerge on the weapons system on these babies... Its a wait and see i guess, unless someone knows any details on them...

it just came to my mind that these are one of the best 80 till 90s US frigates with great weapons system. even if pakistan gets the original weapons systems, it means that it will be the best system in its arsenal. But since the article says, refurbishment then i am pretty positive that it will have new class of weapons system much better than the original ones... any comments?

earlier they said 6, now 8! That's too much, considering we already have 4 F-22ps, we better spend more money on destroyers/ aircraft carriers (not the big ones, like anti-submarine ones with helicopters.)

destroyer yes but be realistic there is no AC for PN in future we dont need it the most we can get is a helo and amphibious transport carrier for seal and marine operations

I am of the opinion that pakistan will be getting SM-1ER non VLS with more than170kms ship to air missile or SM-2ER under $65 mill refurbishment plan. these 8 ships will form backbone of PN from mid 2015s till 2025 till we get more platforms from turkey

.
Pakistan needs these platforms to cover its 850 miles of naval boundary... these ships will form hunter killer pair of 2 resulting in 4 pairs or oliver and then 2 pairs for F22P to cover vast pakistani coast lines from any incursions by subs... very powerful system with a great potential to detter any kilo base assualt on pakistan maritimes during a war situation.. It also will form first line of defence against any sea based air attacks by IN or indian airforce.. more eyes on our coast before anyone reaches pakistani coasts for strategic strikes...
This will further make sure that there is no such thing as naval blockade by indian navy for vital oil supply for Pakistan. Inturn, these ships will be employed to block any weapon or oil supply bound for indian coast during the war from persian gulf and even from Suez canal....

As we can see, there are 3 different ways OHP can protect pakistans sea based interest during war.

its range is 9000kms, airsearch radar covering 400kms radius, half a million square kilometers and surface radar of 100 kms roughly radius esentially 31 thousand sq kms.. i am not sure about the sonar AN-SQS56 which orginally comes with it...

buying old junk refurb and use what totally non-sense! paying heavy cost!!

buying mercedes expensive - expensive homes ... in UK USA and pakistan spending money on useless stuff by our leaders and officals and for Country defence buying oldy junk!!!

.
Well when we will have 6 OHP class frigates we can think of 8 right now we don't even have 1 ...

And even with all the the ships we will be barel a modest navy not briliant navy just modest navy...

But I won't complain we are so far behind in Naval forces its not even a joke our sea shores are open avenue for ppl to come in and out

3/8 F22P friagtes
0/6 OHP class frigats (1 being recieved in August)
0/4 Type054 frigates

So out navy is in bad shape

Agonizing slow process to update

The number 8 might include a couple of ships to be used as spare parts hulls. And remember, PN is roughly getting 3 OHPs for the price of 1 F22P, which itself is already relatively cheap.

Both SM-1ER and SM-2ER have an additional stage and because of that won't fit the standard Mk13 GMLS on an OHP (even if that were functional): they need either Mk22 GMLS or Mk41 VL GMLS.
