The article is from 2016, apparently per the article ex PM Nawaz was keen to see this project materialize.

"On the direction of PM’s direction the ministry had engaged a firm of international repute for the conduct of initial feasibility and survey of the project across the country and proposed sites for some 17 smart cities in Balochistan, 12 in the Punjab and eight each in Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa."

Has anyone here have any update on this? I was just curious to google why we never thought of new cities as we are worried about overpopulation. Can anyone confirm if the new government is carrying on with this or has it dropped the idea?

It's more or less going to be restructuring of the old existing small towns

Plannings are being done but this need great financial support which we haven't at the moment plus water resources also needs to be taken into account.

Financial support is an excuse. The real problem is lack of planning and vision, taking right steps at right time and making right decisions at right time. Malik Riaz is a reality.

That's the problem with Noora his projects aren't that bad but lack of enthusiasm, lack of funds, gross mismanagement and corruption worsens everything. Now Aftab Iqbal (that guy from Khabarnaak) has been crying about this for ages we need new cities our big cities are being choked but no one bothers about this and i don't know if current gov have any plans about this either. Now we don't have any funds anyway so it doesn't matter if current gov wants to build new cities or not. Just Google "NEOM" city KSA i wish our vision less "leaders" also had thought of something similar few decades back.
